What a Viking Helmet Actually Looked Like

No horns. The only complete Viking-age helmet ever recovered — the Gjermundbu helmet, unearthed in Norway in 1943 — is a rounded iron cap with a spectacle guard around the eyes and a nasal bar. Our helmets draw on that find and on related Vendel-period pieces, with riveted steel panels, hand-fitted leather liners and a brushed or blackened finish.

These are decorative reproductions. They sit well on a stand or shelf, photograph properly, and pair naturally with a round shield or a bearded axe for a full display set. They are not certified protective equipment and are not built for contact fighting.

Did Vikings really wear horned helmets?

No. The horned helmet comes from nineteenth-century opera costume design, not archaeology — no horned helmet has ever been recovered from a Viking-age grave.

Are these helmets safe for combat reenactment?

No. They are display and costume reproductions with genuine riveted steel construction, but they carry no protective rating. For contact fighting you need a helmet approved by your reenactment body.

What size are they and will one fit me?

Most are built to an adult average with an adjustable leather liner. Check the internal circumference listed on each product page before ordering.

How do I stop the steel rusting?

Wipe it dry after handling and apply a light coat of oil every few months. Keep it off damp walls and out of humid rooms.

How long does delivery take?

Orders are inspected and dispatched from Memphis, TN within 1–2 weeks, with US delivery typically taking a further 3–7 business days.
