One detail on a Bowie is almost always overlooked and it is the crossguard. Nearly every other American working pattern dropped the guard long ago, because a guard gets in the way of choking up on a blade for detail work. The Bowie kept it, and the reason is the way the knife is used. A big blade driven into wood, hide or bone stops suddenly, and without a guard your hand keeps going onto the edge. The guard also gives you a positive index so you know exactly where your hand sits without looking, which is worth a great deal when you are working in poor light or with cold fingers.

Balance point, and why a 7 inch Bowie feels lighter than it is

Pick any knife up on one finger under the guard and find the spot where it sits level. That is the balance point, and it explains more about how a knife feels than its weight ever will.

On this Bowie the balance sits just forward of the guard, which is a deliberate target. Move it further forward and the knife chops harder but stops being controllable for fine cuts. Move it back into the handle and it becomes nimble but you have to force every chopping stroke yourself. Just ahead of the guard is the compromise that has kept this pattern alive for two centuries, because it lets one knife both split kindling and trim a piece of leather.

Three things get it there. The clip removes steel from the top of the blade near the tip, which takes weight off the far end of the lever. The full tang and the mass of the handle pull the centre back. And the distal taper, the gradual thinning of the blade from the shoulders toward the point, removes weight exactly where it does the most harm. That taper is also what stops a seven inch blade feeling like a bar of stock with a bevel on it.

What that buys you in practice is a knife that will baton through camp wood, break down a carcass, cut cord and shave a feather stick without needing three knives to do it.

Why Damascus and not stainless

Forge welded from 1095 and 15N20 and drawn out to 352 layers, this blade carries a pattern that goes all the way through the steel. Printed and laser etched blades look similar in a photograph and give themselves away under a file or after a serious sharpening.

The functional argument for this pairing on a camp knife is that it gives you hardness and toughness at once, which single steels struggle to do. The 1095 gets to 58 to 60 HRC and holds an edge through wood, rope and hide far longer than a soft stainless blade will. The 15N20 carries nickel, which adds toughness so the blade absorbs shock from batoning rather than chipping. Stainless would be more tolerant of neglect and less capable under load, and it would give a much flatter pattern. Dry it and oil it and the trade is entirely in your favour. The wooden handle

The grip is shaped from wood and finished by hand so it fills the palm rather than sitting flat in it. Wood remains the best material for a knife used outdoors in cold weather, because it does not pull heat out of your hand the way a steel or synthetic grip does, and because damp wood grips better than damp plastic.

It is also repairable and refinishable at home, which no moulded handle is. Every handle here is shaped from a different piece of timber, so the grain, the figure and the tone vary from one knife to the next. Feed it with a light oil once or twice a year, keep it out of long soaks, and keep it away from radiators and car dashboards where dry heat shrinks wood away from the tang. Care and sharpening

Damascus is carbon steel underneath the pattern, so treat it like carbon steel. Dry after use, thin film of mineral or camellia oil before storage, and out of the sheath for long spells because vegetable tanned leather traps moisture against a blade.

For a knife that gets used on wood, sharpen the belly at around twenty degrees per side rather than a thin slicing angle, because a fine edge chips on hardwood. A note on handmade variation

This Bowie is hand forged. It is not machine made and it is not bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph on this page. Every billet draws out differently, so the Damascus figure belongs to your blade alone, and the handle is cut from a different piece of timber than the one photographed.

The dimensions, the steel, the layer count, the hardness and the build are the same every time. The grain, the tone, the pattern and the exact profile are not, because each one is worked by hand from natural materials. If you want two that match, this is not the right shop.

Frequently asked questions

Can I baton firewood with this

Yes. A full tang, a seven inch blade and the toughness of the nickel bearing layers make it a capable batoning knife for kindling and small rounds. Strike the spine over the middle of the blade, not over the tip or the handle, and stay off knots.

What is the guard for

It stops your hand sliding forward onto the edge when the blade stops suddenly in wood or bone, and it gives you a fixed reference so you always know where your grip sits. On a big knife used with force it is a safety feature rather than a decoration.

Is it sharp when it arrives

Yes. It is finished on a stone before packing and will shave and slice out of the sheath. If you plan to use it mostly on wood, put a slightly wider bevel on the belly at the first sharpening and it will hold up better.
