Helmets, shields and the fittings that go with them, forged from steel in our own shop rather than pressed from sheet.What the archaeology actually showsOnly one near-complete Viking helmet has ever been found, the Gjermundbu helmet, unearthed in Norway in 1943. It has a rounded cap of four riveted plates and a spectacle-shaped guard over the eyes and nose. There are no horns on it, and none on any other find. The horned Viking helmet is a nineteenth-century stage invention.Shields were round, roughly 80 to 90 centimetres across, built from planks with an iron boss over a central hand-hole.
