A long straight edge on a heavy head is slow; a long edge hooked down under a light head is fast. The gap behind the beard also lets the hand choke up close to the blade, which turns a fighting axe into a carving and shaping tool. The same hook can catch a rim or a shaft and pull it aside.Ours are forged from high-carbon or Damascus steel and hung on rosewood, ash or birch, with a fitted leather blade cover.
