The tomahawk is a North American axe form: a light head, a straight haft, and a friction fit that lets the head be knocked off and re-hung in the field.Why the head is not wedgedOn most axes the head is wedged permanently onto the haft. A tomahawk head is tapered and slides down onto a tapered haft, held by friction and by the force of use. That sounds fragile and is not, it means a broken handle is a ten-minute repair with a knife and a green stick rather than the end of the tool.Ours are hand-forged from high-carbon or Damascus steel and hung on hardwood, with a leather head cover.
