The gladius is the short sword of the Roman legions, roughly 50 to 65 centimetres of blade, worn on the right hip and drawn with one hand.A weapon for a formationIt is short because the legion fought shoulder to shoulder behind a wall of shields. There was no room to swing, so the gladius thrusts through the gap. The Mainz pattern has a waisted blade and a long point; the later Pompeii pattern is straight-sided with a shorter triangular tip, quicker to make and just as effective.Ours are hand-forged from high-carbon steel with bone or wood grips.Please check your local law before ordering.
