A collar is the band that sits where the head meets the wood. It tidies the joint, spreads the load off the shoulder of the haft and stops the timber splitting out under a hard strike. In brass it does all of that and gives the eye a warm line between dark steel and pale wood, which is why it turns up on almost every piece worth photographing.
Heads above the brass
Ravenskegg is the Ragnar style head, Damascus, 20 inches overall with a 5 inch cutting edge. Grainbeard carries an etched wolf head over a walnut haft with a brass collar and butt cap and a brown leather edge sheath. Brasshelm sets a Helm of Awe etched head on a 19 inch ash haft with brass at both ends. Hammerbeard is the dark one, a blackened head with an etched Mjolnir on a 16 inch rosewood haft, which is the shortest and the handiest of them. Runebite goes plainer, a high carbon bearded head with an Elder Futhark engraved cheek on ash, again collared in brass, with a leather blade sheath.
They sit in bearded axes, inside the wider Viking axes range. If a haft ever gives up, replacements are in axe handles and hafts.
