The francisca is the throwing axe of the Franks, and it gave them their name rather than the other way round.Made to be thrown firstThe head has a distinctive S-curve arch and sits far forward. Frankish infantry threw a volley of them at close range immediately before contact, the axes broke shields, and a shield with an axe head buried in it becomes dead weight. What survived the throw was then fought with by hand.Ours are hand-forged from high-carbon steel on hardwood hafts. Please check your local law before ordering.
