A messer is a sword built like a knife. The tang is a flat slab with scales riveted either side, rather than a narrow rod peened into a pommel, and most carry a nagel, the steel stud that sticks out sideways to cover the back of the hand. It was the sword for people who were not allowed swords, and it worked well enough to stay in use across Europe for centuries.
