The Japanese swords here cover the katana, the wakizashi that partners it, the tanto, the straight bladed ninjato and matched daisho sets. Every piece is hand forged and single edged, mounted the traditional way with a cord wrapped tsuka over a textured underlay, a tsuba at the guard and a fitted wooden saya. Several arrive with blade oil, a cleaning cloth and a care card.
Two steels run through the group. Plain 1095 high carbon is hardened to 54 to 58 HRC, and one piece here is edge hardened to 58 HRC over a softer spine. Damascus katana are 1095 and 15N20 forge welded, folded and acid etched at 58 to 60 HRC, which is where the layered pattern in the steel comes from. Katana run about 36 to 40 inches in the saya with 26 to 28 inches of blade measured from the habaki, at roughly 2 lb 6 oz to 2 lb 10 oz bare. Wakizashi run 26 to 30 inches sheathed with 18 to 20 inch blades.
