A hand made board is not identical to the next one off the bench, which is the point. The planking runs where the timber wanted to run, the paint has brush marks, and the rim is worked around the edge by someone with a hammer rather than pressed on. It is why these look like objects and not like merchandise.
Wood, steel and one curved Roman face
Emberward is the traditional one, a thirty inch planked linden face with a brass boss carved with knotwork and a rawhide rim, linden being the timber the Norse actually used. Lionward is the medieval heater, thirty inches tall with a painted rampant lion, a knotwork border and a leather arm strap. Legionwall is the Roman scutum, thirty seven inches tall and curved, with a steel boss, painted wings, a rawhide edge and a fitting kit. Three are steel faced. Ringward has a domed centre boss, a riveted rim and an engraved Norse knotwork band. Ringwall carries a Celtic knotwork border, and Starguard is painted with a star and concentric bands.
They sit in Viking shields, with the classical boards in Roman and Greek shields and the fittings in shield bosses.
