A polearm is a head on a shaft long enough that reach becomes the point. High carbon steel is what the heads are made from here, plain 1095 at 54 to 58 HRC, because a polearm head takes shock along its whole length and toughness matters more on it than a few extra points of hardness ever would.
Heads, lengths and hafts
The halberds are the biggest group, at 60, 62, 64 and 66 inches overall with heads from 15 to 18 inches, combining an axe bit, a spike and a hook on one head. One of them has a hardwood haft with riveted steel langets and needs no sheath. The polehammers reach 52 and 58 inches with 9 and 8.5 inch heads. A poleaxe sits at 50 inches with a 5.5 inch cutting edge. The bardiche is the odd one out, a long curved cleaving blade at 54 inches overall with an 18 inch cutting edge, a hardwood haft and a steel butt cap. Two glaives round it out at 56 and 62 inches with 20 and 24 inch blades. Two heads are sold on their own with no haft supplied, for anyone hanging a piece themselves: a halberd head with a seven inch open socket drilled for two rivets and a fitted leather cover, and a polearm head with brass langet plates and twin steel straps. Before you order five feet of steel and wood
Measure the room and the vehicle. A 66 inch halberd does not go round a stairwell and does not fit in most cars diagonally. Hafts want oil rather than varnish so cracks stay visible, and the load sits where the wood meets the langets, which is the joint to check. If you are hafting a loose head yourself, shafts are in axe handles and hafts. For the terms sellers use loosely, the steel glossary is the plain version. To shop by shape, the long bladed staff arms are in glaives and polearms and the combination heads are in halberds.
