A blackened sword has been finished with a black oxide or a dark chemical treatment rather than polished bright. It was a real practical finish, since oxide slows rust, and it happens to photograph well against a pale wall. Everything on this tag carries that dark surface on the blade, the fittings or both.

Sootbrand is shorter at 31 inches with a 24 inch fullered blade, a black oxide finish and a wire wrapped grip. Gloomridge is a black broadsword, 38 inches overall with a 28 inch diamond section blade, a swept guard and a ribbed grip. Two carry the world tree. Ashenroot is 36 inches with a Tree of Life pommel and a cord grip, and Nightbough is 37 inches with a Yggdrasil pommel and a downswept guard. Thornbite is Damascus, 40 inches overall with a 32 inch wave blade, a barbed guard and blackened fittings. Ripplehook is the flamberge, with a blackened hooked guard over a knotwork etched wave blade.
