A Damascus sword is a pattern welded blade. Two steels, 1095 and 15N20, forge welded into a billet, folded, drawn out to a blade and then acid etched so the layers show. On a sword this is harder than on a knife, because the billet has to be drawn out a long way without a single weld failing anywhere along its length, and a flaw in the middle of a 30 inch blade is a flaw you find at the worst possible moment.
What is on this tag
Messers, wakizashi, cutlasses, gladius short swords, flame bladed swords, sabres and Viking patterns. Overall lengths run from about 23 to 35 inches with blades from roughly 17 to 29. The steel is Damascus of 1095 and 15N20, forge welded and acid etched, at 58 to 60 HRC. Grips are olive wood, rosewood, leather wrapped or cord wrapped, and fittings include brass tsuba, engraved collars, ring guards and faceted pommels. Several carry etched valknut or Celtic knot panels on the flat.
Real pattern against surface print
The layers in a forged billet run through the thickness of the steel and are visible on the spine and at the tang, not only on the polished flat. A printed or chemically stenciled pattern sits on the surface, looks slightly too regular, and stops at the grind lines. On a sword this is worth checking carefully because the price difference is large. The five checks before you buy covers what to look at, and the pattern welding explainer covers how a billet is actually built.
Care
The etch is a finish and not a coating. Handling wears it at contact points and abrasives remove it. Wipe, dry, oil lightly, and store the blade out of a closed scabbard. The pattern welded blades are in the Damascus swords and the Roman short blades in the gladius.
Why a pattern welded sword costs more
It is not the pattern. It is the failure rate. Drawing a billet out to 30 inches means every weld along the whole length has to hold through repeated heating and hammering, and a blade that delaminates at the eighteenth inch is scrap after days of work. That risk is priced into every pattern welded sword anyone sells honestly.
