A cutlass is a short broad curved sword with a guard that wraps around the knuckles. It was a naval tool as much as anything else, short enough to swing between decks without catching a beam and stout enough to cut rope, canvas and worse. That squat practicality is why it still reads as a sailor blade rather than a gentleman one, and why the guard matters more here than on any other sword shape.

Saltbrand is the naval pattern at thirty inches with a twenty four inch blade, plainer and more military in its fittings. Brinehook matches that length again with the same blade. Sunwarden is the Damascus naval version at thirty inches overall, finished with a black leather scabbard and brass throat and chape, which makes it the most complete of the group. Ravenhold is the other Damascus one, a pirate cutlass with the layering running right through the curve of the belly.
