A dagger is a short double edged blade built around the thrust. It was the last thing anyone reached for and the thing everybody carried, which is why more daggers survive than swords. These run from fifteen to twenty inches overall, which puts them between a large knife and a very short sword.
Roman, Norse and invented
Two are Roman pugios, the broad waisted dagger a legionary wore on the left hip. Wolfgleam is sixteen inches overall with a twin fullered waisted blade, a solid brass guard and a ribbed hardwood grip. Wasptooth is fifteen inches with a raised midrib blade, an engraved bronze guard and a leather sheath. On the Norse side, Grimleaf is seventeen inches with a knotwork cut guard, a disc pommel and a leather sheath, and Duskthorn is the longest at twenty inches with a smooth black grip and a knotwork engraved guard. Wingcrest is the invented one, a seventeen inch fantasy dagger with a winged guard set with a red cabochon. Ringspike is the Damascus bayonet, with a fluted steel grip and a ring guard.
