The Shellwarden is a broad bladed Damascus short sword built around a pierced steel shell guard. The shell wraps the front of the hand, is cut through with shaped openings, is backed with deep red panels so the piercings read clearly, and carries a Celtic knotwork boss at the centre of the outer face. A knuckle bow sweeps up from the shell to meet the pommel, and the grip between them is plain black under a polished steel disc. The blade is wide at the shoulder, tapers in a long clean line to the point, and carries a raised central ridge running its full length.

Guards like this appeared when swords stopped being carried by armoured men. As long as a swordsman wore a mailed or plated gauntlet, a simple crossbar was enough. Once a sword became something worn at the hip in ordinary clothes, the hand needed steel of its own, and the answer over about a century was the shell, the ring, the knuckle bow and eventually the full basket. Specifications

Why the guard is pierced rather than solid

A solid plate of steel across the front of the hand would protect just as well and cost less to make, so the piercing is worth explaining. Three reasons, all of them real. Weight is the first. A shell guard sits at the far end of the hilt and every ounce there changes how the sword handles, so cutting metal out of it keeps the balance where you want it without shrinking the guard. Sight is the second. Openings let you see through the guard to your own hand and to what is beyond it. Craft is the third, and it is not a small one. Piercing was where a hilt maker showed what he could do, and a well cut shell was a statement of the maker as much as the owner.

The red panels behind the piercings are a display choice rather than a period necessity. They sit the openings against a contrasting ground so the pattern reads from across a room, which is exactly the job this sword is being asked to do. The knotwork boss at the centre is cut into the steel, not applied on top.

The steel and the fittings

The blade is pattern welded from 1095 high carbon steel and 15N20, forge welded, folded, drawn and forged to shape before hardening and tempering to 58 to 60 HRC. The etch at the end brings up the layering, which reads as a fine ladder along the flats and swirls where the steel moved around the central ridge. The pattern is structural and goes right through the blade, so sharpening never removes it.

The shell, the knuckle bow and the disc pommel are steel, polished rather than blackened, and the whole hilt is assembled around a full tang peened over the pommel. The red panels are a coloured backing set behind the pierced steel. It is a display finish, and it is described here honestly as that rather than as enamel or inlay.

Handling and balance

A short sword with a shell guard handles differently from a plain crossguard sword of the same length. The mass of the guard sits behind your hand, which shifts the balance rearward and makes the blade feel quicker than its width suggests. Slide your hand fully into the shell so the knuckle bow lies across the back of your fingers rather than resting on them, and the sword sits naturally in line with your forearm.

This is a hand finished collector and display piece. No sparring or full contact claim is made for it. The shell guard also makes it a striking sword on a stand or a wall bracket, because the pierced work is what the eye goes to first.

Care

Wipe the Damascus blade after handling and leave a thin film of mineral oil on it, because an etched surface holds moisture slightly more readily than a plain polish. Get into the piercings of the shell with a dry brush occasionally rather than letting dust pack into them, and keep polish and oil off the red panels. This short sword is made by hand in the Czech Republic and imported by Ransack Viking. It is not drop shipped from an importer catalogue. Every piece is opened, checked and photographed before it goes on the site, then shipped from our warehouse in Memphis, Tennessee. Processing runs one to two weeks, because a pierced shell hilt is slow work and these are made in small runs. US shipping is free, returns are accepted within seven days, and the lifetime warranty against defects in forging, grind, heat treat and fittings has no end date and needs no receipt.

A note on handmade variation

This sword is made by hand, not machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Every pierced shell is cut and filed individually, so the openings will not land in exactly the same places by a hair. The Damascus pattern is unique to its billet. The red will read slightly warmer or deeper depending on the light and the batch, and the leather scabbard will take its own tone. The length, the steel, the heat treat and the build are the same every time. The character is not.
