The saya is the wooden scabbard a Japanese blade lives in, lacquered rather than oiled so it sheds moisture and does not swell against the steel. Black is the plain finish, the one that never looks wrong on a stand, and it throws a polished blade into relief the moment it comes out.
What is mounted in black
Moonedge is the katana, high carbon with a bo hi fuller at 54 to 58 HRC, a cord wrapped handle and a black lacquer saya. Stormfold is the Damascus version, a 1095 and 15N20 blade at 58 to 60 HRC with an oval iron tsuba. Inkfold takes the same steels down to wakizashi length, 28 inches overall with a cord wrapped tsuka. Nightpath is the straight one, a ninjato at 33 inches overall with a 22.5 inch blade in a straight black lacquered saya with a cord. Trinesaya is the smallest, a Damascus tanto with a Valknut etched blade, a black cord wrapped handle, a round steel tsuba and a black scabbard.
The long blades sit in katana and Japanese swords and the shorter ones in wakizashi. If you need a sheath rather than a whole sword, look through scabbards and sheaths.
