Mail is a shirt of interlinked rings and it is the single most useful thing a fighter ever wore. It spreads a cut across dozens of rings instead of one line of hide, it flexes with the body, and it lasts for generations if you keep it dry. Butted mail, where the rings are closed but not riveted, is the practical modern version.
Bodies and heads
Nightweave is the largest, a blackened hauberk cut to a forty eight inch chest and knee length in 9 mm butted rings in a 4 in 1 weave. Ringwarden is thigh length with short sleeves in the same ring size, with a split skirt so you can sit or ride in it. Two shirts share the Ringmantle name: one in mild steel with butted round wire rings and a thigh length skirt, the other a shorter blackened shirt cut to a forty six inch chest. On the head, Hoodwarden is a coif with a leather bound face opening, a drawstring throat and a shoulder mantle. Ravenmail is the blackened coif with an integral ventail and a bright ring face course.
