Daggers, which people overlook
A dagger is double edged and built to thrust, which makes it useless in a kitchen and superb on a wall. It is also the shape with the longest and strangest history in Europe, running from rondels and bollock daggers through stilettos, and the dagger types article works through the family properly. Fixed blades come with a stitched cowhide sheath and an edge already on them. Axes arrive mounted on a wedged haft with a leather blade cover. Swords come with a scabbard on some pieces and not on others, which is worth checking before you buy a wall bracket. Nothing here needs a second purchase to be usable on the day it is opened.
Sizes, before you order
A 6.5 inch folder disappears into a pocket. A 12 inch knife wants a belt. A 30 inch dagger sword wants a wall. Decide where the thing is going to live before it arrives rather than afterwards, which is the single most common regret with a gift this size.
