A samurai carried two blades, and the short one mattered more than films suggest. The wakizashi stayed on the belt indoors, where a katana had to be left at the door, and it was the blade actually to hand when something went wrong in a room. That is why the fittings are usually finer than on the long sword.
Lengths, wraps and scabbards
Moonwake is the shortest at twenty six inches overall with an eighteen inch blade, a clay hardened hamon and a brass habaki, the collar that seats the blade in the scabbard. Shadowcurve is twenty eight inches with a blackened curved blade, a cord wrapped tsuka and a matching saya. Cinderpine is twenty eight and a half inches with a twenty inch blade, a brown cord wrap and sageo and a black saya. Tidefold is the Damascus one, twenty nine inches overall with a twenty and a half inch blade, a grey saya, a navy cord wrap and brass fittings. Trithorn is the set of three, each with its own lacquered scabbard and cord wrapped handle in black, red and ivory.
