The Ironlegion is a gladius, the short broad sword of the Roman legions, built here with a blackened blade, a thick steel guard plate cut with a plaited knot band, a ribbed wooden grip in warm reddish tones and a pale disc pommel. The blade runs wide and almost parallel for most of its length before a long taper carries it to the point, and a raised central ridge stands proud down both faces.

The short blade was a doctrine, not a compromise. A legionary fought shoulder to shoulder behind a large curved shield, and in that formation there is no room to swing. The shield goes forward, the gap opens for a fraction of a second, and the point goes through it. Roman writers were blunt about the arithmetic. A cut of any depth is survivable, and a thrust of a few inches into the body cavity usually is not, so a short blade you can drive straight from behind cover beats a long one you cannot bring to bear. The famous Pompeii type, named after examples found in the buried city, dropped the earlier wasp waisted profile for straight edges and a short triangular point, which is faster to forge and better at exactly that one job.

Why the grip is ribbed and the pommel is a disc

Pick this one up and the hand tells you what the shape is for. The Roman grip was turned with a series of raised ribs so the fingers drop into fixed positions, which matters when the hand is sweaty and the movement is a hard straight thrust rather than a controlled cut. Nothing slides. Above them sits a swelling that fills the palm, and beyond that a broad disc pommel that stops the hand travelling backward off the grip on the recovery.

Roman examples of this fitting set survive in bone, in wood and occasionally in ivory, usually built as three separate pieces threaded onto the tang and locked by a peened button at the end. It is a modular system, which is why so many surviving grips have been replaced at some point in their working life while the blade carried on. The build here follows the same three part logic with a wooden grip, a disc pommel and a heavy guard plate.

The steel and the blackened finish

The blade is hand forged from 1095, a plain high carbon steel with no chromium in it, hardened and then tempered back to 54 to 58 HRC. On a broad short blade that hardness is the right place to sit. There is plenty of steel in the section already, so you do not need extreme hardness to keep it stiff, and the extra temper means the point will bend before it breaks if it meets something it should not.

The dark grey surface is a blackened finish, which is a controlled oxide layer grown on the steel rather than a coating laid over it. It is not paint and it will not flake. It gives a little rust resistance and a lot of visual depth, and it wears at the high points first, so over years of handling the ridge line and the edges will begin to brighten while the flats stay dark. Most owners like that. If you would rather keep it even, oil it and handle it less.

Handling and balance

The gladius is a one handed sword and it is held further forward than most people expect, with the web of the hand pressed up against the guard plate and the ribs of the grip taking the fingers. Held that way the balance point sits only a short distance ahead of the guard and the whole sword feels compact and controllable, which is exactly the point. It is a thrusting sword first, and the long taper to the tip means the last part of the blade is doing most of the work.

This is a hand forged, hardened sword sold as a display and collector piece. It is not a sparring sword and no claim is made that it is safe for contact. Do not strike it against another blade, a shield or a hard target.

Care

1095 is carbon steel with no stainless content, and a blackened finish slows corrosion rather than stopping it. Wipe the blade with a dry cloth after handling and put a thin film of mineral oil on it before it goes back into the scabbard. Do not use metal polish or wire wool on the blackened flats, because both will strip the oxide layer and leave you with bright patches. If a rust spot appears, work it with oil and a nylon pad and accept that the finish there will lighten slightly. There is more in steel care.

The leather scabbard wants a thin feed of leather balm once or twice a year and should not be stored in a damp place with the blade inside it. The wooden grip takes a rub of furniture oil if it starts to look dry, worked in along the ribs and buffed off.

This gladius is made by hand in the Czech Republic, forged, ground, blackened and fitted by people who do the work for a living. A note on handmade variation

This is a hand made sword, not a machine made or bulk produced one, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. The blackening is grown on the steel by hand and its depth of tone shifts from piece to piece, so one blade may read charcoal and another closer to gunmetal. The wooden grip is turned from natural timber, so the grain and the exact warmth of the red brown vary. The knot band on the guard is engraved by hand. The pale pommel disc ranges from cream to a warmer ivory tone. The dimensions, the material and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Is the black finish painted on

No. It is a blackened oxide layer grown on the steel itself, so it cannot chip or peel the way a coating does. It will slowly brighten on the ridge and the edges with handling, which is normal and is not a fault.

Does it arrive sharp

Yes, with a working edge finished by hand. If you would rather have it blunt for display, say so in the order notes and we will send it that way at no extra cost.

Is it a historically accurate gladius

It follows the Roman short sword layout closely in blade shape, guard plate, ribbed grip and disc pommel. The plaited knot band on the guard is a decorative addition rather than a Roman motif, so it reads as an inspired piece rather than a museum reproduction.

Can I use it for reenactment

It is fine to wear and to display at an event. It is not sold as a sparring sword, so it must not be used in any drill or bout where blades make contact. Most groups require blunt rebated steel for that and this is not that.

What is the pale pommel made from

We describe it as a pale disc rather than naming a material, because tone and translucency vary between pieces and we would rather be accurate than impressive. It is finished smooth and seated against a polished steel cap.

How long until it ships

Allow one to two weeks of processing while the piece is checked and any engraving is cut, then normal transit. Shipping within the United States is free and it goes out from our Memphis warehouse.
