Runes on a piece of kit were not decoration to the people who cut them. They were a name, a claim or a charm, worked into the metal so it stayed there. These are engraved rather than printed, which means the mark is below the surface and survives handling, polishing and a wet weekend at an event.
Where the staves are cut
Gazeward puts them across the brass browband of a riveted spectacle helm. Gripfast engraves the cuffs of a pair of forged steel plate gauntlets with articulated finger lames, which is the most legible placement of the lot. Nailward runs a rune line along the hickory handled rip claw hammer, the most domestic object here by a distance. On the shield side, Stormeye carries a pattern etched dome with a rune cut flange, ready to rivet onto a board. Two spearheads round it out. Wyrmtooth is Damascus with winged lugs and a runed brass socket, and Silverleaf is 1095 with knotwork engraving and a runed socket.
