The saya is the lacquered wooden scabbard a katana lives in, and buying the two together matters more than it does with a European sword. A saya is cut to one blade. Everything on this tag arrives with its own, so the fit is right and the sageo is already tied.
Blades, lengths and furniture
The high carbon group runs close together in size. Brasswind is 39.5 inches overall with a 27 inch blade, Emberdusk 40.5 with 28, Nightreed 41 with 28.5, and Stormcrane 41.5 with a 29 inch blade. All four carry black lacquered wooden saya with a cord sageo. The Damascus pair sit at 40 inches: Emberfold with a black ito wrapped tsuka and a lacquered saya, and Tidefold with a pattern welded blade in 1095 and 15N20 under the same ito wrap. Two are Norse rather than Japanese in decoration. Knotcurve puts an etched knotwork band on a 1095 blade with a blackened tsuba, a cord wrapped tsuka and a black saya. Valkgleam etches a Valknut on the blade and pairs a polished steel tsuba with a rayskin and black cord tsuka.
