The rapier is a civilian sword, not a battlefield one. It is long, narrow and built almost entirely around the thrust, carried by people who expected to settle arguments in the street rather than in a shield wall. The hilt does most of the work: bars, rings and cups that cover the hand while it sits out in front of everything else.
Hilts and blade lengths
Runecage is the shortest at forty two inches overall with a thirty five inch rune etched blade, a swept steel hilt, a wire wrapped grip and a black scabbard. Gildcage is a Damascus brass hilt at forty three inches with a thirty six inch blade. Swiftcoil is a swept hilt at forty five inches with a thirty seven and a half inch blade. Quickthorn runs forty six inches, and Bellcourt is the musketeer pattern at forty six and a half inches with a thirty nine inch blade. The two longest are Nightgild, an Italian rapier, and Cupwarden, a cup hilt, both at forty seven inches overall with a thirty nine and a half inch blade.
