A reenactment sword has to satisfy a different audience from a display piece. Somebody on a field will look at the pommel, the guard, the cross section and the length, and will know within seconds whether the shape belongs to the period the group is representing. Decoration matters far less than proportions, and a beautiful blade of the wrong century is worse than a plain one of the right one.
What is on this tag
Blued Viking swords around 36 inches overall, pattern welded Viking swords with Elder Futhark cut guards, side ring swords with raven stamped grips, and hand and a half longswords running to 42 inches. Steel is plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC or Damascus of 1095 and 15N20, forge welded and acid etched, at 58 to 60 HRC. Grips are leather wrapped and cord wrapped over a wooden core. Pommels are lobed, faceted, wheel and disc.
What your group will ask about
Edge condition first, since most societies require a rolled or blunted edge for contact and a sharp one is a display piece only. Then length and balance, then the fittings. A hand and a half hilt on a Viking blade is an anachronism somebody will spot. The display against battle ready explainer defines the terms as they are actually used, which is not always as the market uses them, so check your group’s rules before you buy anything for contact.
The rest of the kit
A sword is the smallest part of a reenactment budget once armor enters the picture. Mail, helmets and shields are in the chainmail armor. For buying for somebody else in a group, the gifts for reenactors guide is organized by period for exactly this reason. The Norse blades are in the Viking swords.
Weight and what a day on a field does
A sword that feels fine in a living room feels very different after six hours in the sun. Balance matters more than total weight, and a pommel that properly counterweights the blade is the difference between a piece you can hold all day and one that hangs on your wrist by the afternoon. Try before you commit if your group has loaner kit.
What arrives
The blade comes with the edge condition the listing states, a grip wrapped over a wooden core, and a peened pommel. Some pieces include a scabbard and some do not, which changes the bracket you need and is worth checking before you order one.
