A stag horn handle knife uses real deer antler for the scales or the full grip. People search the phrase because they want a handle with grain and color that no two knives share, and because antler grips warmer than steel or resin in cold weather. It is also slightly irregular by nature, so if you want two knives that match perfectly, this is the wrong material.
The knives wearing it
Antler shows up across the range on this tag. Skinners and hunting knives around 4 to 5 inches of blade, bowies and camp knives at 7 or 8, folding pocket knives near 2.75 to 3.5, cleavers, kukris and daggers in between. Overall lengths run from roughly 6.5 inches to 15. Almost all of them are Damascus of 1095 and 15N20, forge welded and acid etched at 58 to 60 HRC, with a few in plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC. Antler is often paired with buffalo horn, walnut or turquoise spacers and a Damascus or brass bolster, which is where the visual interest sits on a knife that is otherwise a working tool. Fixed blades ship with a stitched cowhide sheath.
Why antler and not wood
Antler is denser than most hardwoods and it does not swell the way wood does when it soaks. It grips well with wet hands because the surface is faintly textured rather than polished. The catch is that no two pieces match in color or crown shape, so what arrives will sit inside the listed size and pattern family without being identical to the photograph. That is the deal with natural material and it is the reason people want it.
Living with antler
Stag is bone, not plastic. It does not mind rain, but it does mind being left in a hot car or scrubbed with solvent, and a dry grip is happier with an occasional rub of oil or wax. Pins and spacers can settle slightly in the first year, which is normal on natural material and not a fault. If the knife is destined for field use rather than a shelf, the hunting knives hold the antler handled skinners and drop points. For pocket carry, the folding pocket knives include stag scaled folders with brass bolsters. The knife care guide covers handle care alongside the blade, and if you are weighing antler against wood or micarta, the materials guide lays out how each one behaves once it gets wet.
