The liner lock is the reason most modern folding knives can be opened and closed with one hand, and it is a surprisingly recent idea. The principle goes back to the mid twentieth century, but it was Michael Walker who refined it into the form everybody copies now, cutting a leaf out of the handle liner so it springs sideways and jams itself behind the heel of the blade the moment the knife swings open. Push the leaf back across with a thumb and the blade folds. No springs to break, no backspring fighting you, no second hand needed. The Mosaicfold uses exactly that arrangement.

The blade is 7CR17 stainless at 55 to 60 HRC, 3 inches long, opening to 7.5 inches. The handle is resin set with black mosaic pins, made one at a time so the grind, the pin placement and the fit belong to this knife and no other. Three inches is deliberate: it is enough blade for everything a pocket knife is genuinely asked to do, and small enough that you actually carry it.

It is made and finished in the Czech Republic, and it ships with a leather sheath, protective packaging and a working edge already on it.

What the liner lock does and how to use it properly

When the blade swings past vertical the cut leaf in the liner springs inward and sits square against the flat heel of the tang. Any force trying to close the blade pushes the tang into the liner rather than past it, so the harder you cut the more firmly it holds. That geometry is why a well fitted liner lock feels solid without needing a heavy spring, and why the lock face is machined at a slight angle rather than dead flat: the angle lets the leaf creep a fraction further across as the parts wear, so the lock tightens up over its life instead of loosening.

Two habits matter with any liner lock. When you close it, keep your fingers out of the path of the blade before you push the leaf across, because the moment the lock releases there is nothing holding the edge open. And when you open it, let it swing fully home rather than half opening it and resting your grip on a lock that has not engaged. Neither is difficult, both are worth learning on day one. Why stainless and not carbon steel

Most of what leaves this forge is high carbon or Damascus. This one is not, and the reason is the environment a small folder lives in. It goes into a pocket warm and damp, it gets closed while still wet, and the pivot, the liner and the inside of the handle are places you cannot easily reach with an oily rag. Carbon steel in that setting will rust where you cannot see it. 7CR17 carries around seventeen percent chromium, which forms a passive oxide film across the surface and stops that happening.

The honest limits of the steel are worth stating too. 7CR17 is a value stainless in the same family as 440A. It is tough, it resists corrosion very well, and it sharpens quickly on almost any stone, which matters more than people admit on a knife you will touch up on a kitchen whetstone rather than a diamond plate. What it will not do is hold an edge as long as a hard high carbon or Damascus blade under heavy cutting. The resin handle and the mosaic pins

Resin is the practical choice for a knife that will be carried rather than displayed. It does not swell, shrink, rot, split or care about being wet, and unlike wood it is unaffected by going from a cold pocket into a warm room a dozen times a day. It is also dense enough to give the knife some weight in the hand instead of feeling hollow. There is no wood, bone or horn in this handle, which means there is nothing to feed with oil and no annual maintenance at all.

The black mosaic pins are decorative and structural at once. Each one is a bundle of small rods set in a matrix and drawn down, then cut across so the pattern shows on the face. Because they are cut from a length, no two pins are identical and the pattern that ends up on your knife is whatever the cut revealed. Care for the whole handle amounts to wiping it clean and keeping it away from solvents and sustained heat.

Care and sharpening

Stainless asks very little. Wash it, dry it, and once every few months put a drop of light oil on the pivot and cycle the blade to spread it through the joint. Grit in a pivot wears a folder out long before rust ever will, so a rinse after a dusty job is worth more than any oiling routine. Keep it out of the dishwasher. When the edge dulls it comes back quickly. 7CR17 is soft enough to respond to a medium stone without a great deal of pressure, so raise a burr along the full length of one side, flip it and match the work, then strop or finish on a fine stone. Because the blade is short you can work it in one or two passes per side rather than in sections. The method is in sharpening with a whetstone.

Made in the Czech Republic

This is a handmade piece from the Czech Republic, made in a workshop that still forges, grinds and finishes by hand instead of stamping parts out. The smiths there have kept the older way of working, and the wood, horn and leather are shaped and fitted by hand as well. Two pieces of the same design will never be identical, and that is part of what you are buying.

A note on handmade variation

This knife is made by hand, not machine made and not bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph on this page. The resin is cut from sheet, so the depth of colour and the swirl differ from one pair of scales to the next. Each mosaic pin shows whatever pattern the cut exposed. Grind lines and the finish on the liner carry the mark of the person who did them. The dimensions, the steel, the lock and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open and close it with one hand?

Yes. That is the whole point of a liner lock. Open the blade until it swings fully home, and to close it push the liner across with your thumb while keeping your fingers clear of the blade path.

How good is 7CR17 stainless in real use?

It is a dependable working stainless rather than a premium powder steel. It resists rust very well, it is tough enough not to chip on light prying, and it sharpens fast. It will need touching up more often than a hard Damascus blade under heavy cutting.

Is a 3 inch blade easier to carry?

In most of the United States a folding blade under about three inches is the least restricted category, but rules are set by state and often by city, so check your local law rather than assuming. Physically it disappears in a front pocket in a way a four inch folder does not.

Does the resin handle need any upkeep?

None. Wipe it clean and keep it away from solvents and sustained heat. There is no wood in it, so there is nothing to oil.

Will the mosaic pins on mine match the photograph?

They will be the same style of pin and the same black mosaic, but each pin is cut from a length of patterned rod, so the exact face that shows is different on every knife.
