A Viking shield was a plank board, faced with hide, rimmed with rawhide and centred on an iron boss that covered the hand behind it. It was consumable. Fighters expected to go through several. These are built to survive rather better than that, which is a fair trade for anyone hanging one on a wall between events.
Rounds first, then the kites
Ravenward is the plain 24 inch round with a leather arm strap and hand grip. Ravenhold is the painted version, red and white with twin ravens and a steel Valknut boss. Two are steel faced. Silverward is a 20 inch dished face with an etched knotwork border and a riveted centre boss, and Ringwall is a 24 inch round with an engraved Celtic knotwork border, a riveted rim and a domed boss. The kites are later and taller. Palewing stands 40 inches, per pale black and white with an engraved knotwork panel and a riveted rawhide rim. Wavewarden is a 34 inch teardrop with painted bands, and Kiteward is the big one at 48 inches with a riveted steel rim and a leather guige.
They sit in Viking shields, with the Norse boards grouped under round shields. For how these were built and used, read Viking shields explained.
