Walnut is dense, straight grained and does not shatter when a heavy head stops suddenly. That is why it ends up under maces and axes rather than under something decorative. This tag collects everything built on an American walnut haft, which turns out to be a strange mix of medieval blunt work and Norse edges.
Heavy heads on hard wood
The maces come first. Ironpetal is a flanged head, 26 inches overall with a 5.5 inch head and polished steel ferrules. Starthorn is the Gothic spiked version at the same length with a 4.5 inch head and steel collars. Chainmaw is a medieval flail, 27 inches overall on a 20 inch haft. Brassmaul stretches to 58 inches as a polehammer with an 8.5 inch head, and Nightward runs to 66 inches as a halberd with an 18 inch head. On the Norse side, Runehewn is a Damascus bearded axe on a 16 inch walnut haft with a brass rune collar and a leather head sheath, Stormbeard is the hatchet version with a rune line haft, and Stormcleave is a double headed Damascus axe with an engraved Mjolnir cheek. Stavebeard runs a 19 inch walnut haft under a rune and stave etched 1095 head.
The blunt end lives in maces and the edges in Viking axes. Replacement wood is in axe handles and hafts, which is worth knowing before you split one.
