A clip point knife has the last third of the spine cut away, straight or concave, so the tip drops to the center line and comes to a fine point. It is the bowie profile, the classic American hunting profile, and the shape most people picture when they hear the word knife. It pierces better than anything else in this catalogue and it is the first tip to break if you lever with it.
What is on this tag
Bowies, hunting knives, skinners, camp knives, fillet blades and folding pocket knives. Blade lengths run 2.75, 3.5, 4, 5, 7 and 8 inches, with overall lengths from about 6.5 to 13. Steel is mostly Damascus of 1095 and 15N20, forge welded and acid etched, at 58 to 60 HRC, with plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC, a little D2 and some stainless. Handles are stag horn, wood, rosewood, buffalo horn, camel bone and resin. Every fixed blade ships in a stitched cowhide sheath.
Clip point against drop point
The clip gives you a thinner, lower point with more control for piercing and detail work, and a slightly shorter belly. The drop point gives you a thicker tip that survives abuse and a longer belly for skinning. On a hunting knife the drop point is the safer general choice. On a bowie the clip is the whole point of the design, since the swept back spine is what makes the profile read as a bowie at all. Some clips are sharpened along the false edge, which adds a second cutting surface and removes what little strength the tip had. The blade shapes guide lays the profiles side by side.
Bowies specifically
The larger clip points here are bowies in the proper sense, with a guard, a long blade and enough mass forward to chop. They are heavier on a belt than people expect and they attract attention. The bowie buyer guide is direct about sizes and use. The big blades are in the bowie knives and the field patterns in the hunting knives.
Protecting the tip
The fine point is the whole value of the shape and the first thing to go. Do not use it as a screwdriver, a pry bar or a can opener. If a tip does break, it can be reground shorter and the knife carries on working, though it will never look right again. A sheath with a stiff welt does more to protect a clip point than anything else you can buy.
