Engraving without the cliche
A first name on the bolster reads better in five years than a slogan does in one. If you want something less literal, initials and a year work on almost any surface, and a symbol suits an axe cheek or a wide blade flat better than a folder. Whatever goes on, keep it short. Small surfaces punish ambition.
Matching the knife to the father
A father who cooks wants a chef knife or a cleaver, not a skinner. A father who hunts wants a drop point and a sheath he can wear. A father who mostly opens boxes and cuts string wants a folder, and will use it every day, which is worth more than a display piece.
