Steel is mostly Damascus of 1095 and 15N20, forge welded and acid etched at 58 to 60 HRC, with plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC on part of the range. Handles are wood, stag horn, rosewood, buffalo horn, bone and resin. Fixed blades come with a stitched cowhide sheath, so the gift does not need a second purchase to be usable.
Engraving without the cliche
A first name on the bolster reads better in five years than a slogan does in one. If you want something less literal, initials and a year work on almost any surface, and a symbol suits an axe cheek or a wide blade flat better than a folder. Whatever goes on, keep it short. Small surfaces punish ambition.
Matching the knife to the father
A father who cooks wants a chef knife or a cleaver, not a skinner. A father who hunts wants a drop point and a sheath he can wear. A father who mostly opens boxes and cuts string wants a folder, and will use it every day, which is worth more than a display piece. Text engraving is 19 dollars, a symbol is 39 dollars and a family crest is 49 dollars, and the engraving is done in the US after arrival. If the kitchen is the answer, the chef knives are the place to look, and the kitchen knife care notes will stop a carbon steel blade going orange in a dishwasher.
