Emberbeard starts as a bar of Damascus and ends as a working Viking bearded axe. The head is forge welded from 1095 and 15N20, drawn out under the hammer, punched and drifted for the eye, then ground and sharpened by hand before a rosewood handle is fitted and wedged. Overall it stands 19 inches with a 5.3 inch cutting edge and a head and haft weight of 1.23kg, which puts it squarely in the size most people mean when they say Viking hatchet rather than felling axe. The beard is not decoration, and the bearded axe shape explained is worth a read before you settle on a size.

Something worth knowing about the originals: the Viking axe heads that come out of the ground are far lighter than people expect. Many are under 2mm thick through the cheeks and weigh well under a kilogram, where a modern American felling axe head runs from 1.3 to 1.8kg on its own. Norse smiths were not building mass into the head, they were building edge. Iron was expensive, and a thin, wide, bearded bit gave the longest possible cutting edge for the least possible steel. That is the logic this shape still carries.

Why the beard is there

The beard is the part of the bit that hangs down below the eye, and it is not decoration. It does three separate jobs.

The first is edge length for weight. Extending the bit downwards rather than outwards adds cutting edge without adding much steel and without moving the balance point further from your hand. You get 5.3 inches of edge on a head light enough to swing one handed all afternoon.

The second is the choked grip. Because the beard hangs clear of the haft, you can slide your hand right up under the head and hold the axe with your fingers behind the steel and your thumb along the top. In that grip an axe stops being a chopping tool and becomes a carving tool. It is how you shape a tent peg, point a stake, take bark off a pole or notch a spoon blank, and it is the single most useful thing a bearded axe does that a straight bitted axe cannot.

The third is the hook. The gap between the beard and the haft catches things. In camp that means dragging a cut log towards you or hooking a pot bail off a fire. In the historical record it means catching a shield rim and pulling it aside, which is the use the sagas describe and the reason the shape had a reputation.

The cost of a beard is that the axe is not a splitting tool. The bit is thin and the cheeks are flat, so it slices rather than wedges. Use a maul for rounds and use this for everything else.

Why Damascus and not stainless

The head is pattern welded from 1095 high carbon steel and 15N20 nickel steel, forge welded into a billet, folded and drawn until the layers are fine, then etched so the two steels show as light and dark bands. The pattern is not printed and not applied. It runs through the steel and it survives every sharpening the axe will ever get.

Stainless is the wrong answer for an axe and it is worth saying plainly. The chromium content that keeps stainless from rusting also makes it harder to file back to sharp in the field, and at the hardness an axe bit needs it is more inclined to chip than to deform when the edge meets a knot or a stone. Carbon and Damascus deform, and a rolled edge can be filed straight in two minutes. A chipped edge means grinding metal away. The rosewood handle

Rosewood is dense, oily and close grained. On an axe that matters for balance, because a heavy haft brings the point of balance back towards the hand and makes the head feel controllable rather than nose heavy. It also matters for finish, because rosewood carries enough natural oil to take a hand rubbed finish that deepens with use instead of a lacquer that chips and flakes off in patches.

The maintenance is a wipe of oil once or twice a year, worked in with a cloth and left to dry. That keeps the fibres from shrinking in a dry heated house, which is what loosens a head over a winter. If the head does start to move, wedge it again rather than soaking the axe in water. The routine is written out in wooden handle care.

Care and sharpening

An axe edge is a file job before it is a stone job. Clamp the head, run a mill file from the toe of the bit towards the beard following the bevel that is already there, then refine with a puck or a coarse stone and finish fine. Keep the bevel convex rather than trying to put a flat knife grind on it, because a convex edge on an axe resists chipping. Stay away from a bench grinder unless you can keep the steel cool. Blue steel is drawn steel and it has to be filed away before the edge will hold again.

For rust, dry the head after use and put a thin film of oil on it before the cover goes on, especially after green wood. Damascus is carbon steel under the pattern and behaves like it. A grey patina is protection. Orange rust is not and should come off with a soft abrasive and oil. Details in steel care, and the underlying edge geometry in sharpening with a whetstone.

Made in the Czech Republic

Every piece we sell is made by hand in the Czech Republic. The smiths there work the way the trade has been worked for a long time, heating and hammering the steel, taking the bevels down by eye, and fitting the handle and the leather one at a time. There is no automated line anywhere in it, so small differences from one piece to the next are normal and expected.

A note on handmade variation

This axe is hand forged, not machine made and not bulk produced, so the one that arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. The Damascus pattern is a property of the individual billet, so the way the layers swirl across the cheek and around the beard is different on every head. The rosewood is cut from a natural board, so the colour can run from a warm mid brown to something close to purple black, with figure that no two handles share. The exact sweep of the beard and the line of the bevel move by a fraction because they are ground by eye.

What stays fixed is the part you are relying on. The dimensions are the same every time, the steel is the same every time, the heat treat is the same every time and the build is the same every time. Only the character changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a hatchet or a full size axe?

At 19 inches it is a hand axe, which is what most people mean by a Viking hatchet. It is a one handed tool for camp wood, carving and kindling rather than a two handed felling axe.

Is the Damascus real or is it etched on?

It is forge welded from 1095 and 15N20 and the layers go through the head. Printed and laser etched patterns sit on the surface and disappear under a file. This one does not.

Can I split logs with it?

Not rounds. The bit is thin and ground to slice, so it is excellent through limbs, kindling and standing green wood and the wrong tool for splitting seasoned rounds, which want a heavy wedge shaped maul.

Can the head be engraved as well as the handle?

Yes. The cheek above the beard takes a short rune line or a Norse pattern cleanly, and the rosewood takes a longer inscription. Tell us which you want when you order.

Will the pattern on mine match the photograph?

No. Every billet moves differently under the hammer, so the pattern is particular to the head you receive. The dimensions and the steel are what stay constant.
