The Wyrmhewn is a broad bearded axe with an unusually generous head. The edge runs in one long unbroken sweep from a sharp upper horn, round the deep crescent cut out where the haft passes, and down to the point of the beard. That gives a cutting edge far longer than the width of the head suggests, on a head that stays light because most of the steel between the horns has been cut away. The blade is plain high carbon steel, polished to a mirror on the flats with a bright secondary bevel along the edge. A blackened steel collar and two rivets lock the head to a straight oak haft.

On the lower flat a serpent is etched into the steel, coiled back on itself with its body filled in with fine scale work and knot lines. Serpent imagery runs right through Norse carving, from the beast heads on the Oseberg cart to the interlaced wyrms on the Jelling stone, and it was one of the few motifs the Norse carried from pagan work straight into the earliest Christian stonework without changing it much. This axe is hand made in the Czech Republic. Ransack Viking imports it, checks the head seating, the grind and the polish when it lands, and ships it from the Memphis warehouse. Why a bearded axe has a beard

The beard is the part of the edge that hangs below the eye, and it is one of the most sensible bits of design in the whole Norse toolkit. It buys you a long cutting edge without buying you the weight that a solid head of the same width would carry, because the steel behind the edge has been cut away rather than forged thick. A long edge on a light head means a fast axe that still bites deep, which matters as much to somebody shaping a boat strake as it does to anybody else.

The second thing the beard gives you is a place to put your hand. Because the edge drops below the eye, you can choke your grip right up under the collar and still have clear steel in front of your knuckles. That is how a Norse carpenter would have used it for fine work, shaving and paring rather than swinging. Archaeologists find these heads across Scandinavia and the Danelaw in sizes from small hand axes up to the great Dane axe, and the small and medium ones outnumber the large ones heavily, because most of them spent their lives on timber rather than anything else. The upper horn on this head is sharpened too, so the whole sweep from horn to beard will cut.

The steel and the polish

The head is 1095 high carbon steel run to 54 to 58 HRC. That is the right window for an axe. Take the same steel harder and the edge holds longer but chips when the horn catches a knot, take it softer and it rolls under any real work. In the middle fifties the edge deforms rather than fractures, which means a file and a stone bring it back rather than a grinder.

The flats are polished to a mirror, which is what makes the etched serpent stand out, and it also means the head shows fingerprints and will show the first grey of a patina sooner than a satin finish would. That patina is protective and there is no need to chase it off. 1095 is not stainless steel. It will rust if it is stored damp, and the mirror flats show that faster than a working finish does.

The oak haft is straight grained rather than curved, chosen for stiffness and shock resistance. The blackened collar and its two rivets carry the head and stop it working down the haft as the wood moves through the seasons.

Handling and balance

This head is wide but hollow through the middle, so the mass sits out at the edge rather than around the eye. The result is an axe that feels light in the hand and heavy at the moment of contact, which is exactly what you want from a bearded profile. Take the haft near the butt for a full swing and let the beard lead into the cut, because the beard reaches furthest and gives the cleanest draw. Choke up under the collar for carving, notching and any work where you want control rather than power.

The deep crescent between horn and beard is a hook. It will catch on a branch, a rope or a bag, so keep the leather cover on when the axe is not in your hand. This is a hand forged working axe and a display piece, and it is not built or intended for full contact use against another person.

Care

Dry the head after use and wipe a thin film of light oil over the polished flats before it goes back in the cover. Do not leave a damp head shut inside leather, because leather holds water against steel. If rust starts, fine steel wool and oil will take it back, and on mirror flats a metal polish will bring the shine back afterwards. Feed the leather cover with a little neatsfoot oil or balm two or three times a year so it stays supple and does not go hard on the edge. Made in the Czech Republic

The Wyrmhewn is made by hand in the Czech Republic and imported by Ransack Viking. Nothing here comes out of an importer catalogue as a drop shipped item. Every axe is opened in Memphis, checked for head seating, edge condition and haft fit, then repacked and shipped free inside the United States. Processing runs one to two weeks because the stock is genuinely checked. Returns stay open for seven days, and there is a lifetime warranty against defects in forging, grind, heat treat and fittings, with no end date and no receipt needed.

A note on handmade variation

Each of these is hand made rather than machine made or bulk produced, so the axe that arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Oak grain runs where it wants, the tone of the haft shifts from honey to a paler straw depending on the board, the hammer texture around the eye lands differently, and the sweep of the horn and the beard varies by a small amount from head to head. The etched serpent is cut one at a time and its line weight can differ. The dimensions, the material and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Is the upper horn sharpened as well as the beard

Yes. The whole sweep from the tip of the horn to the point of the beard is one ground edge, so the horn will cut and needs the same care in handling as the rest of it.

Is this a throwing axe

No. The head is wide, the collar is riveted rather than wedged, and repeated hard impacts on the pole are not what this build is for. Use a purpose made throwing head for that.

Will the mirror polish scratch

It will. A mirror finish records every mark, and an axe that gets used will pick up fine scratches within the first week. Most owners either accept that or keep this one for display and buy a satin head for the woodpile.

How do I stop the flats going grey

You mostly do not, and you do not need to. Grey patina on 1095 is oxide that slows deeper rust. Oil the head, keep it dry, and only intervene if you see orange.

Can the serpent be replaced with runes

Yes. If you order rune engraving on the cheek that carries the serpent, the runes go in place of the serpent rather than beside it. If you want to keep the serpent, put your runes on the opposite cheek or the haft.
