The Runecurve is a full size kukri with a rune band running the whole length of the spine. The blade drops forward in the classic recurved kukri shape, thin and narrow at the throat and then widening into a heavy belly before it sweeps up to the point. It is plain 1095 high carbon steel, ground with a broad flat bevel and taken to a satin polish, and the two rows of Elder Futhark cut along the spine are a running band rather than a word, framed top and bottom by a fine line. The handle is dark buffalo horn, mounted with a brass bolster at the front and a brass butt cap at the rear, held by a single visible pin.

The shape is older than most people assume. Blades with this forward angled belly turn up in Greek and Macedonian contexts as the kopis and the machaira long before the kukri reached Nepal, and the reason is simple mechanics rather than fashion. Angling the edge forward puts the point of impact ahead of the line of the handle, so the same swing lands with more of a chopping action and less of a push. This knife is hand made in the Czech Republic. Ransack Viking imports it, checks the grind, the handle fit and the sheath before it goes out, and ships it from the Memphis warehouse. The forward angle is the whole point of a kukri, and what a kukri is actually for goes through where the shape came from. The staves are Elder Futhark, the oldest of the Norse alphabets, and every Elder Futhark rune is written out with the name and sound of each one. Specifications

The notch at the throat and what it does

Look at the base of the blade where the edge meets the bolster and you will find a small cut out with a rounded eye and a tooth, sitting right where the edge begins. On a kukri this is called the cho, and there are two honest answers about it. The symbolic explanation, which is the one usually repeated, reads it as a trident or as a stylised representation tied to Hindu iconography. The practical explanation is the one you can test. The cho ends the sharpened edge in a rounded eye rather than running it straight into the bolster, and a rounded termination is where a crack does not start. Every hard chop sends stress into the throat of a blade, and a square inside corner there is exactly the geometry that concentrates it. The cho turns that corner into a curve.

It has a second use that anyone who has sharpened one will know. It gives the stone a place to run out of, so you can take the edge right down to the ricasso without rolling a burr into the bolster. The two small knives in the sheath follow the traditional pairing: one is a small utility knife with a cutting edge, and the other is an unsharpened burnisher used to true an edge in the field the way a butcher uses a steel.

The steel, the horn and the sheath

The blade is 1095 high carbon steel at 54 to 58 HRC. A kukri lives on chopping, and chopping is shock, so the heat treat is aimed at toughness rather than the very last percent of edge retention. That hardness keeps the thick spine from being brittle while leaving the thin edge hard enough to hold a real bite through a session of work. 1095 is a simple carbon steel with no chromium in it, which is why it takes such a clean edge and why it will rust if you neglect it.

The handle is buffalo horn, a natural material with its own grain and translucency. Held to the light you will see the darker streaks running through it, and no two are the same. Horn is warm in the hand, does not get slippery the way polished wood can, and it is what these handles have traditionally been made from. Brass at both ends caps the horn and protects the end grain, and the swell in the middle of the handle is what stops the knife travelling forward in your grip during a hard swing. The sheath is thick vegetable tanned leather with a belt loop and the two front pockets for the companion knives.

Handling and balance

A kukri balances well forward of the guard, and that is the point of it. Hold this one loosely near the butt cap and the head will want to fall, which is the feeling you are meant to use. Let it. A kukri is swung with a relaxed wrist and allowed to rotate into the cut rather than driven through it, and gripping hard is the fastest way to tire your forearm and blunt the effect.

The belly is the working part of the edge. The narrow section near the throat is for detail work, paring and carving, and the tip is for piercing rather than chopping. Because the point of balance sits ahead of your hand, this knife takes a moment to get used to if you have only ever used straight blades. Give it a session on green wood before you ask anything serious of it. It is a working knife, not a piece of sparring equipment, and it should never be swung towards another person.

Care

Wipe the blade dry every time it goes away and put a light film of oil on it. High carbon steel and a leather sheath are not friends over long periods, because vegetable tanned leather is slightly acidic and holds moisture, so store the knife out of the sheath if it is going in a drawer for months. Sharpen with a stone rather than a powered wheel, keep to the bevel that is already there, and use the cho as your run out. The horn handle likes a wipe with a barely oiled cloth once in a while and dislikes being left in direct sun or next to a radiator, which can dry and crack it. Every knife is opened in Memphis, checked for grind, handle fit, sheath fit and the condition of the two companion knives, then repacked and shipped free within the United States. Processing takes one to two weeks because that check is real work. Returns are open for seven days, and the lifetime warranty covers defects in forging, grind, heat treat and fittings, with no end date and no receipt needed.

A note on handmade variation

This is a hand made knife rather than a machine made or bulk produced one, so yours will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Buffalo horn is a natural material and it varies more than almost anything else we sell. Colour ranges from near black to a streaked grey brown, translucency varies, and the pattern of the grain is different in every handle. The rune band is etched individually, the satin finish shows its own scratch pattern, and the leather sheath will vary in tone. The dimensions, the material and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Is it sharp out of the box

Yes. It arrives with a working edge along the belly that will chop green wood straight away. The narrow section near the throat is usually the sharpest part.

Will the horn handle crack

Horn is stable if it is kept away from heat and long dry spells. Do not leave it on a sunny windowsill or above a radiator, and give it an occasional wipe with an oiled cloth.

Can I baton with it

Light batoning through small rounds is within what this blade will take. It is a chopper by design though, and swinging it is easier on both you and the steel than driving it through with a mallet.
