The Trineholt is a broad Damascus bladed sword carrying an engraved Valknut in a bordered panel just below the guard, with a run of etched scrollwork tracing the length of the fullers. The crossguard is polished steel with clover shaped quatrefoil terminals, the grip is oxblood leather laid over a wooden core, and the pommel is a heavy steel wheel with a raised concentric boss on each face. The blade is double edged, broad at the shoulder, and carries paired narrow fullers that keep the weight down without thinning the spine.

The Valknut is one of the few Norse symbols we can point to in stone rather than guess at from later folklore. It appears on the Stora Hammars picture stones on Gotland and on the Oseberg ship burial, in almost every case in scenes involving death, sacrifice or Odin. Three interlocked triangles, nine points, and no surviving text that tells us what the Norse themselves called it. The name Valknut is modern Norwegian and means knot of the slain. Specifications

What the Valknut actually is

Three triangles, drawn so that each one passes over one neighbour and under the other, so the figure cannot be separated without cutting it. There are two forms in the surviving carvings. The unicursal version is drawn as one continuous line, a triquetra opened out. The tricursal version, which is what is cut into this blade, is three genuinely separate triangles locked together like links of chain. Both appear on Gotlandic stones.

What it meant is honestly unsettled. It sits beside Odin in most of the contexts where it survives, often near hanged figures, ravens or valkyries, and the usual reading is that it marked the bound fate of those chosen for the slain. A second reading connects it to the Hrungnir heart described in Snorri Edda as three interlocking points. What is not true is the modern claim that it stood for any single tidy concept, and anyone who tells you exactly what a ninth century Norseman meant by it is going further than the evidence goes. It is engraved here because it is a genuine period symbol cut into a genuine forge welded blade, and that is enough.

The steel and how it was worked

The blade is pattern welded from 1095 high carbon steel and 15N20, which carries nickel and resists the etch. The billet is forge welded, drawn out, cut, folded and welded again until the layer count is high enough for a fine grain, then forged to shape, ground, hardened and tempered to 58 to 60 HRC. The etch at the end is what makes the layering visible, because the two steels darken at different rates in acid.

The engraved Valknut panel is cut into a polished flat left deliberately clear of pattern, which is a practical choice as well as a visual one. A cut line reads cleanly against smooth steel and gets lost against a busy Damascus grain. The scrollwork along the fullers is etched rather than cut, so it sits shallower and catches light rather than shadow.

Handling and balance

The wheel pommel is doing real work here. It is a solid disc of steel set behind the hand, and it pulls the point of balance back close to the guard so a broad blade of this width still turns quickly. Without it the sword would feel like an axe on a stick. With it, the blade tracks and recovers, and the flat faces of the wheel give the heel of your hand something to press against on a thrust.

This is a hand finished collector and display piece and it is sold on that basis. No full contact sparring or edge to edge cutting claim is made. Displayed on a wall or a stand, drawn and handled with care, it will outlive everyone reading this.

Care

Damascus rusts a little more eagerly than plain carbon steel because the etched surface is very slightly textured and holds moisture. Wipe the blade down after every handling session, then leave a thin film of mineral oil on it. Never put it away wet and never store it long term sealed inside the scabbard in a humid room. Feed the leather grip and scabbard with balm once or twice a year. If a rust freckle does appear, take it off early with oil and a soft cloth rather than letting it pit. A note on handmade variation

This sword is made by hand, not machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Every Damascus billet moves differently under the hammer, so the pattern on your blade is unique to it. The oxblood leather will take dye at its own depth, the engraved Valknut will sit at its own exact position by a fraction, and the polish will carry its own hand worked marks. The length, the steel, the heat treat and the build are identical every time. The character is not.

Is the Valknut cut into the steel or printed on

Cut in. It is engraved into a polished panel on the blade and you can feel it with a fingernail. It will not rub off or fade.

How sharp is it when it arrives

It arrives with a working edge, not a razor edge. That is the right finish for a display sword of this length and it can be taken further with a stone if you want.

Can I replace the Valknut with my own runes

Will the Damascus pattern wear away

No. The pattern is the structure of the steel, not a finish on top of it. Sharpening, polishing and years of handling will not remove it, though a heavy polish can soften the contrast until the blade is re etched.
