A leather sheath knife is a fixed blade that comes with somewhere to put it. That sounds obvious until you have bought a knife that arrived naked and spent a month looking for a sheath that fits. Leather is still the sensible material for a carry knife: it is quiet, it moulds to the blade, it does not rattle on a belt, and it can be stitched to fit one specific piece rather than a size range. The blades and what holds them
Sizes run from an 11 inch valknut karambit with black micarta scales to 16 inch kukri choppers. In between there is a 12 inch Viking seax with a stacked leather handle and an etched raven in a hand stitched sheath, a 12 inch combat knife with a sawback spine and a cord wrapped grip, bowies at 15 inches with a brass double guard and a stacked leather handle, a sawback bowie with an etched panel, a Celtic knotwork bowie with a leather lanyard on the sheath, a gut hook skinner with an olive wood handle, a tanto with a knotwork engraved guard, and a pair of rune etched chain knives with two sheaths of their own. Sheath work covers brown leather belt sheaths, hand stitched welts, tooled panels and cowhide. Blades are plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC or forge welded 1095 and 15N20 Damascus at 58 to 60 HRC, with handles in olive wood, walnut, rosewood, bone, black horn, stag antler, micarta and stacked leather washers. Carrying and storing it
Leather holds moisture, which is the one thing a carbon steel blade cannot forgive. Dry the knife before it goes back in, and store it out of the sheath long term rather than in it.
