The Thundercurve is a Damascus kukri with brass at both ends of a dark horn handle. What sets it apart from the rest of the range is the pattern in the steel. Instead of the long straight ladder rungs you often see, the belly of this blade carries a field of rings and swirling eyes, each one a closed loop inside another, so the surface reads more like a cut through a piece of burr wood than like layered bars. Set into the face of the brass bolster is a small Mjolnir, cut and darkened so it sits clearly against the polished metal.

Look closely at the pattern and you can read how the blade was made. Rings and eyes appear when the smith drives dimples into the surface of the billet, then grinds the raised metal back flat. Each dimple pushes the internal layers down into a cone, and grinding the top off that cone exposes the layers as a series of concentric rings, in exactly the way a contour line on a map exposes the shape of a hill. Specifications

Reading a Damascus pattern

Every pattern welded blade tells you what was done to it, and once you know the three basic operations you can read almost any of them. A plain billet drawn straight out gives long parallel lines, which is the pattern people usually picture. Twisting the bar before drawing it out gives a rope or star figure that spirals along the length. Pressing or cutting into the surface and then grinding flat gives closed shapes, and that is the family this blade belongs to.

The size and spacing of the rings tell you how deep the dimples went and how much material was taken off afterwards. Shallow dimples with a light grind give small tight eyes. Deeper work with more removed gives the wide open pools you can see across the widest part of this belly. There is no way to place them precisely, which is why no two blades made this way come out matching, and it is also why a smith cannot repeat a favourite blade on request. What you are looking at is a record of one particular billet and one particular afternoon at the press.

The steel, the horn and the brass

The blade runs 58 to 60 HRC. The alternating layers of 1095 and 15N20 let it sit at that hardness without becoming brittle in the way a single bar of high carbon steel would at the same reading, so you get a longer lasting edge on a blade that still takes chopping shock. The trade is corrosion resistance, of which there is essentially none. This is simple carbon steel and it needs oiling.

The handle is dark buffalo horn with two pins. Horn is warmer than bone in the hand, slightly softer, and it grips better when your hands are wet, which is why it has been the traditional handle material for this shape for so long. Held to the light it shows its own streaking and a faint translucency at the edges. Brass caps it front and back, protecting the end grain where horn is most likely to chip, and the swell in the middle of the handle is what keeps the knife from creeping forward through your grip on a hard swing. The Mjolnir on the bolster is cut into the brass rather than applied to it.

Handling and balance

Like any kukri this one balances forward, out in the belly, and it is meant to be swung loosely rather than gripped hard. Let the weight of the head do the work and let the blade rotate into the cut. If you find yourself squeezing the handle you will tire quickly and get shallower cuts for the effort.

Use the wide belly for chopping, the narrow section behind the cho for carving and fine work, and the tip for piercing rather than heavy strikes. The horn handle is grippier than a polished wood one when wet, but a cord through the sheath or around your wrist is still sensible if you are working in the rain. This is a working and collecting knife rather than a sparring piece, and it should never be swung towards another person.

Care

Dry it and oil it every time. An etched Damascus surface has microscopic texture that traps moisture, so it needs oil more often than a plain satin blade does. Wipe a light film over the whole blade and leave the leather sheath open rather than storing the knife in it for months. Sharpen on a stone, keep to the existing bevel and run out through the cho, and stay away from powered wheels because heat will draw the temper. Horn dislikes dry heat, so keep it off a radiator and out of long direct sun, and give it an occasional wipe with a barely oiled cloth. Feed the sheath leather two or three times a year. A note on handmade variation

This is a hand made knife rather than a machine made or bulk produced one, and the Damascus makes that unusually visible. No two blades carry the same ring and eye figure, because the pattern depends on where the dimples landed and how much was ground away, so yours will differ clearly from the photograph. Buffalo horn varies as much again, from near black through streaked charcoal to a warm dark brown, and the brass will already sit at a slightly different tone from piece to piece. The dimensions, the material and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Will my blade have the same pattern as the photograph

No, and it cannot. Ring and eye Damascus depends on exactly where each dimple was pressed, so every blade is different. Yours will be recognisably the same family of pattern and individually its own.

Is it sharp when it arrives

Yes. It comes with a keen working edge along the belly, and at 58 to 60 HRC that edge lasts noticeably longer than on a plain carbon steel kukri.

Does the brass need polishing

Only if you want it bright. Brass naturally darkens where it is not handled, and most owners like the way the Mjolnir stands out more as the surrounding metal ages. A metal polish takes it back whenever you choose.

Is the horn handle going to crack

Horn is stable if you keep it out of dry heat and long direct sun. The two pins and the brass caps at both ends hold it, so even a cosmetic surface crack would not affect how the knife works.

Can the Mjolnir be replaced with a different symbol

Yes. Order the engraving option and name the design, and it will be cut into the bolster in place of the hammer rather than alongside it.
