The Coilbrand is a hand forged Damascus kukri built around a stacked leather handle, the same construction the United States Army used on its fighting knives through two world wars and for good reason. The grip is not carved from a block. It is built up from dozens of leather washers threaded over the tang one at a time, compressed hard, then turned and sanded to shape as a single body. Leather under compression grips back when your hand is wet, absorbs shock the way wood never quite does, and can be sanded down and refinished decades later without touching the steel.

The blade is folded 1095 and 15N20 Damascus with the deep forward angle and heavy belly of a working kukri, and a shallow fuller cut along the upper spine. Steel collars close the handle at both ends, and the butt cap carries a short line of Elder Futhark runes cut into the polished face. Every one of these is made by hand in the Czech Republic. It comes with a moulded tan leather sheath cut to the shape of the blade.

The forward angle is the whole point of a kukri, and what a kukri is actually for goes through where the shape came from. The staves are Elder Futhark, the oldest of the Norse alphabets, and every Elder Futhark rune is written out with the name and sound of each one. Specifications

How a stacked leather handle is built

Start with vegetable tanned leather about a quarter of an inch thick. Punch out discs, punch a slot in the middle of each one that matches the cross section of the tang, then thread them on wet, one after another, until the stack overruns the length you want by a good margin. The steel butt cap goes on last and is drawn down hard against the stack, either by peening the tang over or by a threaded pommel nut underneath. Compressed like that, the leather loses its sponginess and behaves almost like a dense hardwood. Only then does the maker put the handle on a lathe or a belt sander and shape the swell, the taper and the finger relief.

What you get out of it is a grip that warms to the hand in about a minute, damps the sting of a hard chop, and stays put when it is wet with sweat, rain or anything else. The trade off is that leather is organic and it needs feeding, which is covered further down. If the handle ever loosens after years of hard use, a stacked handle is one of the few grips a competent maker can simply tighten and sand it again rather than replace.

The Damascus billet and the runes on the cap

The blade steel starts as an alternating stack of 1095 high carbon and 15N20 nickel bearing sheet. Forge welded, drawn, folded and welded again, the layer count climbs into the hundreds, and grinding the bevel afterwards slices through those layers at an angle. Etch the finished blade in acid and the 1095 darkens while the 15N20 stays bright, which is the whole reason the pattern is visible. It runs through the full thickness of the steel rather than sitting on the surface. Hardened and tempered to 58 to 60 HRC, the blade holds a chopping edge well and keeps enough toughness in the spine to survive a bad angle.

The runes on the butt cap are Elder Futhark, the oldest of the runic alphabets, in use across northern Europe from roughly the second century onward. Elder Futhark is a phonetic alphabet rather than a set of magic symbols, which is exactly why it converts so cleanly into a name or a date. Handling and balance

The steel bolster and steel butt cap put a little more mass at both ends than a wood handled kukri carries, which pulls the balance point back closer to your hand. In practice that makes this one feel quicker and more controllable than its size suggests, at the cost of a fraction of the pure chopping authority you get from a nose heavy build. For splitting kindling and clearing scrub it still swings like an axe. For anything that needs steering, it steers better.

Grip it loosely at the swell and let the blade fall. The contoured leather fills the palm and the flared butt cap stops the hand sliding back on a full stroke. For carving, choke up until your thumb sits on the spine fuller and use the last few inches before the point.

Care

Dry the blade after every use and wipe on a thin film of mineral or camellia oil before it goes away. Carbon steel Damascus will spot if it is stored wet. Do not soak the handle. Leather washers swell when they are saturated and then shrink unevenly as they dry, and enough cycles of that will loosen the stack. Wipe it down, let it dry at room temperature away from a radiator, and feed it two or three times a year with a small amount of neutral leather cream worked in with your fingers. Made in the Czech Republic

These are made by hand in the Czech Republic and imported by Ransack Viking. Nothing is drop shipped out of an importer catalogue straight to a customer. Stock lands at our Memphis warehouse, gets unpacked and checked piece by piece, and only then goes live as in stock. That is the honest reason processing runs one to two weeks rather than overnight. United States shipping is free, returns run for seven days, and there is a real lifetime warranty against defects in the forging, the grind, the heat treat and the fittings, with no end date and no receipt needed.

A note on handmade variation

This is hand made, not machine made or bulk produced, so the piece that arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Every Damascus billet folds differently, so the pattern on your blade is unique to it. Leather is a natural material and the washers vary in tone, so one stacked handle can read noticeably warmer or darker than another under the same light. Hammer texture, the exact depth of the fuller and the sweep of the recurve all move a little from piece to piece because a person made them. The dimensions, the steel and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Does the leather handle get slippery when wet

No, and that is the main reason the pattern has lasted. Compressed leather actually grips better as it takes on a little moisture, which is the opposite of what polished wood or smooth horn does.

Can I put this in the dishwasher or soak it to clean it

No. Soaking will swell and eventually loosen a stacked handle, and the carbon steel will spot. Wipe it clean, dry it and oil the blade.

What do the runes on the pommel say

They are Elder Futhark characters cut into the polished cap as a decorative line. If you would rather have your own name or a date there, choose the engraving option and we will cut yours in place of the existing line.

Is the sheath a belt sheath

It is a moulded leather sheath cut to the profile of the blade and shaped to hold it by friction. It is included with every knife and is made from the same vegetable tanned hide.

How does this compare to a wood handled kukri

Stacked leather absorbs more shock and stays grippier when wet. Wood is lower maintenance and slightly lighter. Both are full tang here, so the strength is the same either way.

How long does shipping take

Processing runs one to two weeks because each piece is checked at the Memphis warehouse before it leaves, then normal United States shipping on top of that. Engraving adds a few days.
