The Wolfcurve is a Damascus kukri with a wolf cut into its polished steel bolster. The handle is rosewood, pinned through a full tang, with a fine dark inlay line running through each scale and a steel butt cap at the rear. Everything on the hilt is steel rather than brass, which keeps the whole knife in one cool tone and lets the etched blade pattern do all the talking.

Why the bend in the blade does the work

Straighten this blade out on paper and it becomes an ordinary heavy knife. Bend it and three things change at once. The head of the blade moves outside the line of your arm, which lengthens the effective radius of the swing and raises tip speed for the same effort. The mass concentrates in the belly ahead of the bend, so the impact lands where the steel is thickest. And the edge meets the target at an angle rather than square on, so the cut starts as a slice and finishes as a chop.

That third point is the one that surprises people the first time they use one. A straight edge striking wood square has to split fibres apart with brute force. An angled edge starts by parting them along their length and only then drives down, which is why a kukri sinks into green wood so readily and why it works so well on rope, hide and thick cardboard as well as timber. The trade is that a curved edge is fiddly to sharpen. You need to work it in short sections against a stone rather than dragging the whole blade in one pass.

Damascus, rosewood and the steel bolster

The blade is forge welded from 1095 and 15N20, folded to build the layer count, ground and then acid etched so the two steels separate visually. Nickel in the 15N20 resists the acid and stays bright while the 1095 darkens. Hardened at 58 to 60 HRC, the blade holds a long edge on a chopping tool while the layered structure keeps it from behaving brittly.

The rosewood scales are dense and naturally oily, with a fine dark inlay line let into each side. The bolster and butt cap are polished steel rather than brass. That matters more than it sounds. Steel fittings do not develop the warm patina brass does, so this knife will look much the same in ten years as it does now, provided you keep the oil on it. The sheath is black leather with a pouch on the front for the karda and the edgeless chakmak.

Handling and balance

All steel fittings push the balance a little forward compared with a brass hilted kukri of the same size, so the Wolfcurve chops harder and asks slightly more of your wrist on the recovery. Hold it loosely near the butt cap for wood, choke up onto the bolster for skinning, food prep and carving. The dark inlay lines in the scales are a handy visual reference for finding the same grip in poor light.

This is a working blade with a full tang, not a display piece, but avoid prying with the tip and keep it away from bone splitting and metal. A chopper that is used within its design will last a lifetime, which is exactly what the warranty assumes.

Care

Carbon steel Damascus rusts and pitting kills the pattern contrast, so wipe the blade dry after use and keep a thin film of mineral or camellia oil on it. Never store the knife in the sheath for long periods, because leather draws and holds moisture against steel. If the etch ever looks tired, a short soak in diluted vinegar followed by a thorough neutralise, rinse, dry and oil restores it. Give the rosewood a light oil once or twice a year and feed the black leather with a balm so it does not dry and crack at the fold. A note on handmade variation

Hand made is not machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Every Damascus blade carries a different pattern because the swirls record how one particular billet was moved under the hammer. Rosewood colour runs from a light red brown to nearly chocolate depending on the board, the inlay line sits at a slightly different height, and the etched wolf is a fraction different on each bolster. The dimensions, the steels, the heat treat and the build are consistent every time. The character is not, and it should not be.

Frequently asked questions

Is this sharp enough to use for hunting

Yes. It arrives with a working edge and the choked up grip against the bolster gives you good control for skinning and quartering. It is a heavy blade, so it is better at breaking down than at fine caping work.

How do I sharpen a curved edge

Work in short overlapping sections on a stone, following the curve, rather than trying to draw the whole blade across in one stroke. A rounded ceramic rod or a small stone suits the recurve near the notch.

Are the fittings brass or steel

Steel. The bolster, butt cap and pins are all polished steel on this one, which keeps the knife in a single cool tone and means the fittings will not develop a brass patina.

Does the sheath sit on a belt

Yes, the black leather sheath has a belt loop and it carries the karda and chakmak in a pouch on the front.

Can I have runes on the leather instead of the steel
