A full tang kukri in 1095 high carbon with a line of Elder Futhark runes cut along the spine above the cho notch. The scales are dark rosewood, close grained and deep red brown, pinned with three steel pins and set between a polished steel bolster and a steel butt cap. The blade is mirror polished with a wide belly and a swept point, and the leather sheath carries the two traditional companion pieces in a front pocket.

The runes are Elder Futhark, the oldest of the runic alphabets, in use across Germanic Europe from roughly the second century to the eighth. It has twenty four characters and it was cut rather than written, which is why every letter is built from straight strokes. A curve is hard to cut cleanly across the grain of wood or into bone, and a horizontal line disappears into the grain, so the alphabet avoids both. A kukri cuts on the belly rather than the tip, which is the argument the kukri explained makes at length. The staves are Elder Futhark, the oldest of the Norse alphabets, and every Elder Futhark rune is written out with the name and sound of each one. Specifications

How runes were actually cut

Every character in Elder Futhark is made of straight lines, and almost none of them uses a purely horizontal stroke. That is not an aesthetic choice, it is a manufacturing constraint. Runes were cut into wood, and wood splits along the grain. A horizontal stroke running with the grain will either wander into a split or vanish entirely once the surface weathers, so the alphabet was built to avoid it. Vertical staves and diagonal branches read clearly on any surface.

The same logic explains why runes read well on steel. A cut mark on metal is a shadow, and a straight cut catches light at a consistent angle along its length while a curve does not. Look at the line on this spine in raking light and every stroke reads at once. It is a genuinely well engineered alphabet for the tools that made it, which is a nicer thing to know than most of what gets said about runes.

Rosewood, steel and the sheath kit

Rosewood is dense, oily and close grained, which is why it has been used for tool handles and instrument parts for centuries. The natural oil in the timber means it resists moisture without much finishing, and the tight grain takes a polish that does not need lacquer. Colour ranges from deep red brown to nearly purple, and a set of scales will darken further with handling.

The blade is 1095 at 54 to 58 HRC, tough rather than glass hard, which is right for a chopper. It sharpens quickly and gives an edge back easily. Steel fittings rather than brass give this kukri a colder, more restrained look and add a little weight forward of the hand compared with a brass fitted equivalent. The sheath carries a karda, the small utility knife for fine work, and a chakmak, the blunt steel used to true a rolled edge in the field and historically to strike a fire against flint.

Handling and balance

The steel bolster and butt cap sit at either end of the handle, which keeps the balance a little further forward than a wood and brass build and makes this one feel like a chopper first. Hold it near the butt and swing loose for wood, and let the belly land rather than driving it.

Choke up behind the bolster for carving and put your thumb on the spine just behind the rune line. Keep the cho unsharpened. It marks the end of the edge and stops a cut running back onto the bolster and your fingers. The lanyard hole through the butt takes a wrist loop for work where dropping the blade would be a problem.

Care

Wipe and oil the blade after use, and get oil into the engraved rune line as well as over the flats, because a cut mark holds moisture in a way a polished surface does not. Mineral oil, camellia oil or a light gun oil all work, and the same oil suits the karda and the chakmak. Rosewood needs very little, but a wipe of a hard wax oil or boiled linseed once a year keeps it from drying out in a heated house. Keep polish off the wood. Feed the leather sheath with a neutral cream and do not store the blade in it for long periods, since leather holds moisture against steel. More detail is in steel care.

A curve like this does not sharpen the way a straight edge does, and sharpening a curved blade works through the stroke.

A note on handmade variation

Hand made, not machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Rosewood varies more than most timbers. Colour runs from red brown to nearly purple, figure differs from board to board, and a pair of scales will not match the photographed set exactly. The rune line is cut individually so spacing and depth shift a little. Hand polishing means one blade catches light differently from another, and the leather sheath will have taken dye at its own rate. The steel, the hardness, the profile and the build are the same every time. The character is not.
