Norse axe is the catch all people reach for when they want the shape the Vikings actually used, rather than the wide fantasy crescent that turns up in films. In practice that means a bearded head, a hand axe, or a long hafted head on a straight wooden shaft, all cut so the edge does the work and the steel behind it stays light. The phrase pulls in campers who want something that chops, reenactors who need the right silhouette, and collectors who want an etched head on a wall.
Hafts, heads and marks
Haft lengths here span the whole range of use. Hand axes sit at 14 and 15 inches for belt carry and camp work. The common bearded pieces run 17 to 22 inches. Then come the two hand lengths: 26, 28, 30, 34 and around 35 inches, including double bit heads with a bit on each side and a felling axe on a 28 inch hickory handle. Cutting edges on the listings measure 4.5 to 7 inches. Hafts are ash, hickory, oak or walnut, several with a brass or steel collar under the head and a leather wrapped grip. Steel is plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC or forge welded 1095 and 15N20 Damascus at 58 to 60 HRC. Heads carry etched vegvisir, valknut, helm of awe, triquetra, coiled serpent and longship motifs, some blackened, some mirror polished, and nearly all arrive with a fitted leather edge cover. Which one to buy
Pick the haft length first and the etching second. A 14 inch head goes on a belt and splits kindling. A 26 inch haft gives you two hands and real bite but stops being packable.
