Features & Compatibility

A folding pocket knife has to earn its place twice, once in the pocket and once in the hand. The Stagcarry does both. It opens to 7.0 inches with a 3.0 inch fire pattern Damascus blade, it closes into something you can forget about until you need it, and the stag horn scale has been cut, fitted and polished by the same hands that ground the blade. Carry rules vary a great deal by state, and knife laws by state lists them.

The folding knife is far older than most people assume. Roman folding knives with iron blades and carved bone handles have been recovered from first century sites across Europe, and the basic idea barely moved for the next fifteen hundred years. The one change that mattered came with the backspring, a flat leaf of steel bearing on the tang that holds the blade open and closed under tension. Everything modern in a slipjoint pocket knife descends from that single piece of sprung steel, and it is still the reason a good folder feels deliberate rather than loose.

This one is forged, ground, heat treated and finished in the Czech Republic, then fitted with a cowhide leather sheath cut for this knife rather than for a template. It ships sharpened, sheathed and boxed, with free shipping inside the United States.

What a 3 inch folder is actually built around

The pivot is the whole knife. Everything else can be beautiful and the piece will still feel wrong if the pivot is loose or gritty, because that single pin carries every ounce of force you put through the edge and translates it back into your palm. On this one the pivot is set and peened by hand, then the blade is walked open and closed until the action is even from first movement to last.

Three inches is not an accident either. It is the length at which a blade still does real work, opening boxes, cutting cord and line, breaking down packaging, trimming a lanyard, while staying inside the carry rules of most American cities and states. Past about three and a half inches a folder starts to need a pocket clip and a plan. At three inches it just lives with you. The blade is ground with a flat primary bevel and a modest secondary edge, which is the geometry that keeps a short blade cutting rather than wedging.

The brass file work along the spine is not decoration for its own sake either. Filing the spine gives the thumb somewhere positive to sit when you choke up on the blade for close control, which is exactly the grip a small folder gets used in most of the time.

Why Damascus and not stainless

The blade is 1095 and 15N20 forge welded into one billet, folded, drawn out and etched, so the light and dark bands you see are two different steels rather than a printed finish. The 1095 brings the carbon that lets the edge get genuinely hard. The 15N20 carries nickel, which resists the etch and stays bright, and which adds toughness so the blade does not become brittle at hardness.

Against a soft stainless folder the trade is simple and honest. This steel takes a keener edge, holds it longer under real cutting, and comes back to sharp faster on a stone. In return it will spot if you close it wet and leave it in a pocket for a week. That is a two minute habit, not a defect. We set the whole comparison out in Damascus versus stainless.

Stag horn in the hand

Stag horn is antler, and antler is one of the few grip materials that improves with handling. It is dense, it does not go slick when your hands are damp, and it warms to skin temperature far faster than steel or resin. The outer bark of the antler carries its own texture, so no two handles come off the bench with the same feel or the same colour.

Care is minimal. Keep it out of prolonged soaking, keep it away from radiators and car dashboards where it can dry and check, and give it a wipe of light oil once or twice a year the same way you would treat a wooden handle. The method is written up in wooden handle care and applies directly to horn, bone and antler.

Engraving, runes and your own design

Use the rune converter on this page to turn a name, a date or a short phrase into Elder Futhark and we will cut it into the steel or the handle. If you would rather have a Viking pattern than a rune line, choose your own design in the engraving option above the add to cart button and tell us whether it goes on the blade or the handle. Where a piece already carries an engraved design, your chosen engraving replaces it rather than sitting alongside it.

All engraving is cut here in the same workshop that forged the blade, before the knife is packed, so nothing is sent out to a third party and nothing is added after the fact. On a folder this size a short line reads best on the blade flat, and initials or a date sit well on the horn. More detail and the full range of options are on the engraving page.

Care and sharpening

Damascus is carbon steel underneath the pattern, so treat it like carbon steel. Wipe the blade dry after use, put a thin film of mineral or camellia oil on it before it goes away for a while, and do not store it closed and damp. A folder has a pivot and a spring channel that will hold water, so if it does get soaked, open it, dry it and put a drop of light oil at the pivot.

Sharpening is ordinary work. A 1000 grit stone will reset the edge and a 3000 will polish it, and because the steel is hard and the bevel is thin, most sessions take a few minutes rather than an evening. Full method in steel care and sharpening with a whetstone.

Made in the Czech Republic

Every piece we sell is made by hand in the Czech Republic. The smiths there work the way the trade has been worked for a long time, heating and hammering the steel, taking the bevels down by eye, and fitting the handle and the leather one at a time. There is no automated line anywhere in it, so small differences from one piece to the next are normal and expected.

Ransack Viking is a United States company based in Chicago, Illinois. We bring the pieces in ourselves, inspect them on arrival and ship them from our own warehouse. If you add engraving, that is carried out here in the United States before your order goes out.

A note on handmade variation

This knife is hand forged. It is not machine made and it is not bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph on this page. The Damascus pattern is drawn out under a hammer and no two billets move the same way, so the swirl and the banding will differ. The stag horn came off a different animal to the one in the photo, so the tone, the texture and the exact profile of the grip will differ too.

What does not change is the substance. The dimensions, the steel, the hardness, the grind and the build are the same every time. The character is not, and that is the point of buying something worked by hand from natural materials rather than moulded in a factory.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Stagcarry sharp when it arrives

Yes. It leaves the shop with a working edge already set on a stone, sharp enough to take hair off an arm and to cut paper cleanly. It is not shaved to a razor polish, because a slightly toothier edge lasts longer in pocket use and is easier for you to maintain at home.

How does the blade lock or hold open

It is a traditional sprung folder. A leaf of steel bears on the blade tang and holds it firmly open and firmly closed, with a positive snap at both ends of the travel. Open it deliberately with a thumb on the nail nick and close it the same way, with your fingers clear of the path of the edge.

Can I have a name and a date put on a blade this small

Yes. A 3 inch blade takes a short rune line or a set of initials and a year comfortably. Longer phrases work better on the horn scale. Tell us in the engraving option which surface you want it on and we will lay it out to suit the space.

Will my knife look like the photograph

It will be the same knife in every measurable way and a different one in character. Expect the same length, the same steel and the same shape, and expect a different Damascus pattern and a different horn colour. That is normal for hand forged work.

Is a 3 inch folding knife legal to carry

In most of the United States a non locking folder at or under three inches is the least restricted knife you can carry, which is part of why the size is so common. Rules still vary by state and by city, and some places restrict carry in schools, courthouses and airports regardless of length, so check your local law before you carry it daily.

How long does it take to arrive

Processing is one to two weeks because each piece is made and finished by hand, and engraved orders sit at the back end of that window. Shipping inside the United States is free, and returns are open for seven days from delivery.

  2. Showed up right on time and looked even better than the photos. Weight and balance make it feel like a real functional piece not some cheap replica. Couldn’t be happier with this.
