Mjolnir is Thor’s hammer, the one that levels mountains and comes back to the hand. In the sources it is short in the haft because the dwarves who made it got the proportions wrong, which is a better detail than most modern retellings keep. Hammer pendants turn up all over Scandinavia in the tenth century, which makes this the best attested Norse symbol there is.
Hammers and everything else
The war hammers are the core. There is a 1095 piece at 24 inches on a haft with a rune cut head, a leather wrapped grip and a head cover, a 16 inch Mjolnir hammer with a rune cut head on a tan leather haft with a wrist loop, a Damascus hammer at 15 inches with a ladder pattern head, a black leather haft and a knotwork collar, a Damascus war hammer with a flat faced head on a rosewood haft with brass bolsters and a turned brass pommel, a rune cut steel head on an ash haft with a steel collar and a wrist lanyard, and a double faced head on a 19 inch walnut haft with an engraved collar and a leather belt hanger. Two are blacksmith hammers rather than fighting shapes: a steel hammer with a Mjolnir shaped head and a wrapped leather grip, and a Damascus hammer with a carved ash handle and a Norse knotwork panel. Away from hammers there is a Viking sword at about 38 inches with a Mjolnir pommel, a kukri with a Mjolnir cut brass bolster, a stainless tankard with an etched Mjolnir and riveted bands holding 20 fluid ounces, and a keyring charm with an etched axe and hammer. Prices run from 109 dollars to 525 dollars.
What the hammer meant
The pendants were worn as a marker of who you were as much as what you believed, and the story behind the object is worth knowing before you hang one on a wall. Our page on Mjolnir covers the sources and the archaeology, and the guide to the Norse gods puts Thor in context. The hammers are gathered in Thor’s hammers, and the wider run of forged hammer heads is in Viking hammers.
