The Thunderhide is a short hafted Mjolnir hammer. The head is a bright polished block of forged 1095 with a line of Elder Futhark runes cut across the face, the haft is bound in tan leather with a steel butt cap and a leather wrist loop, and it comes with a matching leather head cover carrying the same runes tooled into it.

There is a reason the hammer of the god of thunder has a famously short handle, and the myth is quite specific about it. In the Skaldskaparmal, Loki bets his own head that the dwarf brothers Brokkr and Sindri cannot match the treasures made by the sons of Ivaldi. While Sindri works the forge, Brokkr pumps the bellows, and Loki turns himself into a fly to sabotage it. He bites Brokkr on the hand, then on the neck, and neither stops him. On the third attempt he bites his eyelid hard enough to draw blood into the dwarf eye, and Brokkr lets go of the bellows for a moment to wipe it away. The fire drops. The hammer that comes out of the forge is perfect in every respect except one: the handle is short. The gods judge it the greatest of all the treasures anyway. Ours is forged, hardened, cut and bound by hand in the Czech Republic. It belongs with the Thor’s hammers. If the shape is not quite right, the war axes run close to it.

Why the short haft is the whole point

A short handle on a hammer is usually a flaw and here it is the defining feature, which is exactly what the myth is telling you. Mjolnir is thrown as much as it is swung, and everything about a thrown hammer wants a short lever: the shorter the handle relative to the head, the less the thing tumbles wildly in flight and the more the mass at the front dominates the rotation.

It is also the reason a hammer this size sits so well in a display. The proportions read as compact and dense rather than long and thin, and a squared head with chamfered corners has a lot of flat surface for runes to sit on. If you have only ever seen Mjolnir as a pendant an inch tall, the first thing that strikes you about one at full size is how much steel is in it.

The head is drawn out and squared under the hammer rather than milled from bar stock, and the corners are chamfered rather than left sharp. That is partly the traditional shape and partly practical, since a sharp corner on a hardened striking face is where a chip starts.

The steel and the leather

The head is 1095 high carbon steel run at 54 to 58 HRC. On anything that takes impact you want toughness ahead of hardness, because the failure mode of a hard brittle striking face is a piece breaking off it, and there is no fixing that. Mid fifties is where a striking tool belongs and it is where we leave it.

The haft is wrapped in vegetable tanned tan leather. Vegetable tanning uses tannins from bark rather than chrome salts, which is the older method by several thousand years and the one that gives leather its firm body, its ability to take a tooled impression and its habit of darkening with handling. That last part matters here. A tan hide starts pale and honey coloured and goes progressively deeper and richer with skin oils and sunlight, so a hammer that gets picked up often will not look the way it looks in the photograph a year from now. It will look better. The head cover is cut from the same hide and carries the runes stamped into the surface.

Handling and balance

Almost all the weight is in the head and the haft is short, so the balance point sits practically at the collar. In the hand that reads as a very dense, very controllable object. There is no wind up to it and no wandering. You hold it near the butt cap and the head goes exactly where you point it.

The wrist loop is not decorative. On a piece where the mass is that far forward and the handle that short, a wet or gloved hand can lose it, and the loop is what stops the hammer travelling further than you intended. Put your hand through it before you lift the hammer rather than after.

Care

The polished faces are bare high carbon steel and will spot if they are handled and put away. Wipe the head down and leave a thin film of oil on it. Let it dry fully before the leather cover goes back on, because leather against damp steel in a closed cover is the fastest route to rust on the whole piece. Feed the leather on the haft, the loop and the cover with a neutral conditioner once or twice a year, worked in and buffed off. Do not use saddle soap repeatedly on tooled leather since it lifts the impression over time. Keep the wrap dry. Made in the Czech Republic

This is a handmade piece from the Czech Republic, made in a workshop that still forges, grinds and finishes by hand instead of stamping parts out. The smiths there have kept the older way of working, and the wood, horn and leather are shaped and fitted by hand as well. Two pieces of the same design will never be identical, and that is part of what you are buying.

A note on handmade variation

This hammer is hand made rather than machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Vegetable tanned leather is the most obviously variable part. Every hide takes colour differently, so one haft will be a shade warmer or paler than the next, and the grain, the pores and the small natural marks of the animal come through the finish rather than being hidden by it. The chamfers on the head are worked by eye. The polish takes light in its own way. The head weight, the steel, the heat treat and the build are the same every time. The character is not. Is this a display piece or is it functional

The head is genuinely forged and hardened and the haft is a hardwood core, so it functions as a hammer. Most people buy it to display and to hold rather than to work with, and it does both.

Can I throw it

No. Whatever the myth says, a leather wrapped haft and a steel butt cap will not survive being thrown at anything, and neither will whatever it lands on.

Will the tan leather darken

Yes, and that is the point of vegetable tanned leather. It deepens with handling and light over months into a much richer colour. Conditioning it evenly keeps the change even.

Is the leather cover included

It is, and it carries the same runes tooled into it as the head. It ships with the hammer.

Can I have a name in runes instead
