Viking arms covers everything a Norse fighting man might have carried, and the honest version of that list starts with the spear rather than the sword. Spears were cheap, everyone had one, and they turn up in graves far more often than swords do. The sword was the expensive item and the status object. Films have this backwards and have done for eighty years.
What is on this tag
Falchions and Viking swords around 30 inches overall, boar spears with 13 inch lugged heads on 30 inch ash and walnut hafts, gothic spiked maces at 26 inches with 4.5 inch heads, poleaxes, halberds and glaives running to 66 inches. Steel is plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC or Damascus of 1095 and 15N20, forge welded and acid etched, at 58 to 60 HRC. Fittings are steel and brass, hafts are ash, walnut and oak, and several pieces carry etched valknuts or knotwork.
The spear, properly
A Norse spear is not a stick with a point. The heads here are socketed and forged with a defined blade, some with lugs or a crossbar to stop a thrust going too deep, which matters when the thing on the other end is a boar. It works in a line, it works from behind a shield, and it needs almost no training compared with a sword. The spear article covers construction and use, and the heads themselves are in the Viking spears.
Blunt arms and armor
Maces and hammers exist because mail is very good at stopping cuts and much worse at stopping impact. That is the whole logic of the medieval arms race and the comparison article sets out what each one actually did. The full Norse range is in the Norse arms.
Polearms and space
Glaives, halberds and poleaxes on this tag run from about 50 to 66 inches overall. They are magnificent and they are extremely awkward to own indoors. They will not fit in a wardrobe, they need two anchor points on a wall, and they need a room with a ceiling that can take them being lifted. Measure before you order.
Steel and finish
Heads are forged and ground rather than cast, sockets are welded, and the hafts are wedged. Carbon steel wants a wipe of oil and a dry room.
