The round shield is the Norse standard: a flat planked board about a metre across, gripped at the centre behind an iron boss rather than strapped to the forearm. That centre grip is what makes it fast, since the whole board pivots on the fist. Faces here run from 24 to 30 inches, which is a sensible size for a wall and a workable one on a field.
Boards, bosses and rims
Ravenward is the plain 24 inch board with a leather arm strap and hand grip. Stormwheel is the same size painted as a navy and white pinwheel with a steel boss and an Elder Futhark rune ring around it. The two large ones are planked in the traditional way. Huginward is a 30 inch planked body with a steel dome boss, an engraved knotwork roundel and a rawhide rim. Emberward uses a 30 inch linden face with a brass boss carved with knotwork, which is the softer and more authentic timber choice. Ringward is the steel faced option, with a domed centre boss, a riveted rim and an engraved Norse knotwork band.
