This is a plague doctor mask cut and stitched from vegetable tanned leather, with a long curved beak, a pair of solid brass goggle rims holding tinted lenses, and a brass cap over the tip of the beak that carries a small engraved mark. The leather is burnished to a deep chestnut, the seams are saddle stitched by hand along the crown and the underside of the beak, and brass strap tabs are riveted at each side to take the head strap.

The honest history is more interesting than the myth. The beaked costume is usually credited to Charles de Lorme, chief physician to Louis XIII, who described a waxed coat, boots, gloves and a beaked mask around 1619. The beak was packed with dried flowers, herbs and spices because medicine at the time held that disease travelled in bad air, so filtering the air through something sweet smelling was thought to be protective. What is far less certain is how widely any of it was actually worn. Most of the images everyone recognises come from later engravings and from Venetian carnival costume rather than from working physicians. This mask is a costume and display piece and we would rather say that plainly than dress it up as medical kit. It is cut, stitched and finished in the Czech Republic. Why the beak is shaped the way it is

The beak is not a random flourish. It is a hollow chamber that stands the packing material well away from the face, and it slopes downward so that anything condensing inside runs to the tip rather than back toward the nose. Under miasma theory that geometry mattered, because the whole idea was to give the incoming air a long path through something aromatic before it reached the wearer.

Making that shape in leather is the real work here. Flat leather does not want to become a cone with a curve in it. The beak is cut as a pattern of gores, wet formed over a mould so the fibres set into the shape, then stitched along a single spine seam and burnished. If it were simply rolled and glued it would collapse in a week. Wet formed and stitched, it holds its curve permanently and keeps a hard edge along the seam.

The goggle rims are functional as well as decorative. A brass ring rolled into the leather stiffens the eye opening, which is the weakest part of any mask, and gives the lens a solid seat rather than letting it flex against a leather edge.

Leather weight and tannage

This is vegetable tanned cowhide at roughly 6 to 7 oz, which is about 2.5 mm thick. Vegetable tannage matters for a piece like this. It is the tannage that takes a wet form and holds it, that burnishes to a glassy edge, and that darkens and deepens with handling instead of going grey. A chrome tanned hide of the same thickness would be softer, would not hold the beak shape, and would not take a tooled or engraved line at all.

The chestnut colour is a dyed and hand burnished finish rather than a pigment coat sitting on the surface, which is why the tone varies slightly across the panels and why it will continue to deepen over the first year of use. There is no plastic in the shell.

Fit and sizing

This is made to one adult size with an adjustable strap, and it sits over the brow, down the sides of the face and past the chin. It is not a tight fitting mask and it is not meant to be. Leather worn against the face for hours gets warm, so most people wear it over a hood or a cloth head covering, which also stops the finish from picking up skin oil.

Be realistic about vision. The lenses are tinted and the eye openings are small, so peripheral vision is limited and dark rooms are genuinely dark through them. If you are wearing this to an event, walk the space in it before the lights go down. The canvas bag and the pair of loose black leather straps shown in the photograph are studio props and are not included.

Care

Keep it dry. Vegetable tanned leather will absorb water and can lose its formed shape if it is soaked and then dried fast near heat. If it does get wet, blot it and let it dry slowly at room temperature, stuffed lightly with paper to hold the beak. Feed the leather with a neutral leather conditioner two or three times a year, worked in thinly and buffed back, and it will stay supple for decades. Wipe the brass with a dry cloth; if you want it bright rather than aged, a little metal polish on a cotton bud will do it, but most owners let it patinate. Store it upright or on a shelf, never crushed under other things, and never in a sealed plastic bag. Our general finish notes on steel care apply to the brass fittings.

Made in the Czech Republic

The work behind this piece happens in a Czech Republic workshop that has kept to the old methods. Steel is forged and heat treated by hand, the grind is taken down by eye rather than by machine, and the handle, fittings and sheath are cut and finished one at a time. Because of that, every piece carries small marks of the hand that made it.

A note on handmade variation

This mask is hand made, not machine made or bulk produced. What arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Leather is a natural material and every hide takes dye differently, so the chestnut runs lighter or darker between pieces, the grain and any healed marks in the hide show through, and the burnish sits with its own highlights. The stitch spacing is set by hand. The dimensions, the material and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see properly through it?

Well enough to walk and talk, not well enough to drive or to move fast in the dark. The lenses are tinted and the openings are small. Try it on in the space you plan to wear it in before the event starts.

Can I breathe in it?

Yes. The beak is an open chamber and air moves freely through the bottom of the mask. It is warm after an hour, in the way any leather mask is warm, but it is not restrictive.

Is this any kind of medical or protective equipment?

No, and it never was, even in 1650. This is a costume and display piece. It filters nothing, it seals nothing, and it should never be treated as protective equipment of any kind.

Will it fit over glasses?

Usually not comfortably. The goggle rims sit close to the face and there is little clearance behind them. If you wear glasses, plan on contact lenses for the evening.

Can I hang it on a wall?

Yes, and a lot of these are bought for exactly that. The strap tabs take a hook or a peg, and the wet formed beak keeps its shape hanging indefinitely.
