A matched pair of forearm guards in black leather, cut with a pointed upper edge, laced through steel eyelets down both sides with a long thong and closed at the wrist with a roller buckle. Each one carries the outline of Mjolnir, the hammer of Thor, cut into the face. Bracers are one of the most recognisable pieces of Norse costume in the world, and it is worth being straight about where they come from. There is no archaeological evidence that Viking Age warriors wore leather forearm armour. Not one grave has produced a pair. The convention is modern, born out of reenactment, film and fantasy, and it has become part of the visual language of the period whether the archaeology supports it or not.

What is historical is the word and the original purpose. Bracer comes from the Old French brassiere, from bras, meaning arm, and the item it originally described was an archer wrist guard, a strap of leather that stopped the bowstring from flaying the inside of the forearm on release. Leather bracers of exactly that sort were recovered from the Mary Rose, the English warship that sank in 1545, along with the longbows and the arrows. So a leather forearm guard is a genuinely period object, just not a Norse defensive one. We cut, dye, engrave and set these in a Czech Republic workshop and they ship assembled with the laces threaded and the buckles fitted. Thor’s hammer was an amulet long before it was a shape on a tool, and the meaning of Mjolnir covers that.

Why these lace rather than buckle all the way up

A buckled bracer fits one arm well and every other arm badly. A laced one closes down onto whatever is inside it. That is why the eyelets run the full height of both edges here rather than just at the top and bottom. Pull the lace and the two edges draw together evenly along the whole forearm, which means the guard grips the taper of the arm instead of gapping at the wrist or biting at the elbow. It also means the same pair works over a bare arm in summer and over a heavy sleeve or a mail cuff in winter, which a fixed buckle arrangement cannot do.

The buckle at the wrist is doing a different job. Lacing holds the body of the bracer, but the wrist end is where a guard tends to rotate, so a strap that closes independently at the narrowest point stops the whole thing spinning around the arm when you swing something. Between the two you get a guard that stays where you put it. The pointed upper edge is not just styling either. Cutting the top edge to a point rather than straight across keeps material over the outside of the arm where a glancing blow lands and takes it away from the inside of the elbow where a square edge would dig in every time you bend.

The leather and the black dye

These are cut from vegetable tanned cowhide at roughly 7 to 8 ounce, around 2.8 to 3.2 mm. That is heavy enough to hold a shape and stand up on the arm rather than collapsing like a cuff, and light enough that you forget you are wearing them after ten minutes. Veg tanning uses bark tannins rather than chrome salts, which is what makes the hide take an engraved line, hold a burnish and darken with age instead of staying flat forever.

Black is the hardest colour to do well on veg tan because the dye has to penetrate rather than sit on the surface. These are dyed through, sealed and buffed, so a scuff shows dark leather underneath rather than raw tan. Expect a small amount of colour transfer onto a light sleeve in the first few wearings, which is normal for hand dyed black leather and stops once the finish has settled. The Mjolnir is cut into the face and burnished, so it reads as a shadow line rather than a print, and it will not wear off.

Fit and sizing

These are laced rather than sized, which covers a wide range, but there are limits. Measure around the widest part of your forearm just below the elbow and around your wrist. The standard pair closes comfortably on a forearm of roughly 9 to 13 inches at the widest point. Below that the two edges will meet and the lace will run out of travel. Above it the edges will stand apart, which some people like as a look and some do not. If you are outside that range, or if you intend to wear them over a mail sleeve or a thick padded arming coat, tell us in your order notes and we will cut the panels wider or narrower.

Lace them from the elbow end down toward the wrist so the tension pulls the guard into position rather than pushing it, then close the wrist buckle last. Left and right are interchangeable, so wear the engraving facing whichever way you prefer.

Care

Feed the leather two or three times a year with a conditioner worked in thinly and buffed off. That keeps the hide supple where it flexes at the elbow and stops the eyelet holes from drying out and tearing. If they get soaked, let them dry at room temperature and away from heat. A radiator or a hot car will make veg tan hard and brittle and there is no way back from that. Store them flat or rolled loosely rather than crushed under kit in a bag, because a hard crease across the panel will eventually crack the finish. Wipe the eyelets and the buckle with a lightly oiled cloth if they get wet, since bare steel fittings will spot. General notes on protecting our steel are on the steel care page. Made in the Czech Republic

This piece is made by hand in the Czech Republic, in a workshop that still works the old way. The steel is forged, ground, heat treated and finished by smiths who learned the trade from the people before them, and the wood, horn and leather are cut and fitted by hand rather than pressed out on a line. That is also why no two pieces come out exactly the same.

A note on handmade variation

These bracers are hand made, not machine made and not bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Hide grain runs differently across every panel, hand rubbed black settles with its own depth and sheen, the cut of the Mjolnir is done freehand and the eyelets are set one at a time. The dimensions, the material and the build are the same every time. The character is not, and a pair that looks stamped out of a die is a pair nobody made by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Did Vikings actually wear leather bracers?

There is no archaeological evidence that they did. No Viking Age grave has produced a pair. Leather forearm guards are historical as archery wrist guards, including examples recovered from the Mary Rose, but as Norse arm armour they are a modern reenactment and film convention. We sell these as Norse costume, not as reconstruction.

Will they fit my arm?

They lace closed, so they cover a wide range. The standard pair suits a forearm of roughly 9 to 13 inches at the widest point below the elbow. Outside that, or if you plan to wear them over mail or a padded sleeve, tell us and we will cut the panels to suit.

Are they protective?

They are a costume and light reenactment piece, not certified armour. Leather at this weight will absorb a knock from a padded LARP blade. It will not stop a sharp blade or a steel point and should not be trusted to.

Will the black rub off on my clothes?

There may be a little colour transfer onto light fabric in the first few wearings, which is normal for hand dyed black veg tan. It settles quickly. Buffing them well before first use with a dry cloth reduces it further.

Can I have runes instead of the hammer?
